  • Something Real by Heather Demitrios: I know this one might be out already but I haven’t gotten the chance to get it in my grubby hands yet. Β The love I have been seeing for this book on my Goodreads is immense! I have been a long time (closet) reality show fan so I think this one would really interest me!
  • The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu: A few months ago Bekka of Great Imaginations recommended Waiting by Carol Lynch Williams to me and I loved it. When she read my review she went ahead and recommended this one and since I will read any contemporary she recommends to me this one had to be on the list too.
  • Ask Again Later by Liz Czukas: I am actually starting this one later today and I am so excited because I have heard that it is a lot of fun. Β The synopsis makes it sound kind of cheesy but that is exactly what I am in the mood for sometimes so I hope to love this one!
  • The Wicked We Have Done by Sarah Harian: I did a cover reveal for this book what feels like forever ago on my old blog Alluring Reads and I loved the cover the moment that I saw it. Β  It sounds kind of like The Hunger Games but with convicts fighting to see who lives, I’m pretty excited for it! Β Also, Sarah is absolutely hilarious on Twitter so I can’t wait to see how that translates into her writing.
  • Love Letters To The Dead by Ava Dellaira: I am one of those people who is obsessed with pop culture and I take the death of celebrities to heart. Just reading the synopsis for this one had me feeling tinglies because I remember the deaths of almost all of those celebrities. I’m hoping this one is a tearjerker!

Ok it was SO hard to pick just 5! I could have easily put 25 on this list! These are in no particular order, either, as I’m way too indecisive for that! Also, we can all see a theme here right? I guess I like my books dark! πŸ˜€ I’ll leave the crying ones to J-Dog.

  • Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman: It’s funny because I’m rarely a fan of historical books, but I love particular kinds of books in the genre, and books about WWII and Hitler (and gothic/thrillers in general) have always fascinated me in a morbid way. There’s also something about a historical setting than makes a creepy book better!
  • The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings: I have been excited for this one ever since I first read the blurb. And then even moreso once I saw it was for fans of Moira Young’s Dust Lands series which I loved!
  • Beware the Wild by Natalie C. Parker: This sounds like a fun and creepy mind-f*ck of a book! It reminds me of that movie where this woman’s daughter disappears on a plane and no one but her remembers her kid even being on the plane at all! I don’t remember the name of that movie but I remember loving it!
  • Pointe by Brandy Colbert: I love me a good contemporary that deals with darker subjects. This one is about a kidnapping and what sounds like dark psychological secrets. Def. my kind of read.

What debuts are you most excited for this year?

  1. Nick @ Nick's Book Blog

I’m excited for some of these too. I already read Ask Again Later, Jenni, and it’s super adorable. I hope you like it as much as I did. πŸ™‚
I’m looking forward to Wicked We Have Done. I love that cover and that blurb!

Prisoner of Night and Fog is one of my most anticipated books this year. I mean, who doesn’t want to read a book about Hitler? It should be really interesting.

I hope you guys end up loving all these books! πŸ™‚

  2. Erin

I’ve only read one historical fiction novel (The Book Theif) but I loved it! Definitely looking forward to Prisoner of Night and Fog as well!

  3. Camilla

I’m really excited for both “Prisoner of Night and Fog” and “Beware the Wild” as well, as they just seems to wonderfully different and strange in each their way!

I’m not great at keeping up with too many debut authors (so thanks very much, guys!), but on the other hand I have such a massive list of “next-in-series” and new books from favourite authors that it’s probably for the best πŸ˜‰

  4. Nara

HOW HAVE I NOT HEARD OF THE MERCILESS BEFORE?!
It sounds freaking awesome! I need to read more horror, but I have to say, I haven’t come across too many YA horror books. Or the ones I have read are seriously not scary at all lol e.g. The Madman’s Daughter (I personally wouldn’t even class that as horror tbh haha)

Quite excited for The Truth About Alice too! It sounds so intriguing!

  5. Mary @ BookSwarm

Like you, I would have a REALLY hard time narrowing it down to just five (FIVE?!? Are y’all masochistic or what?!?). The Murder Complex, Something Real and, well, too many more. Yay 2014 for a rockin’ book list!

  6. Lily B

Ask Again Later by Liz Czukas sounds really cute. Love Letter’s to The Dead is nice writing and I am looking forward to so many others!

  7. Siiri

OHHH JENNI. The first three books on your list are on my tbr as well. Ask Again Later seems like the cutest and I cannot wait to see your thoughts. Ok, Giselle, I have a bit more difficulty with your list, because I only know one of these–The Murder Complex and hellllls yeah for this! However, Beware the Wild seems like a mind-f indeed and I love me some of those! Plus, Pointe? GIMME SOME DARK CONTEMPORARIES!!! You definitely made my tbr bigger right now with these two. I hope that all of these books live up to your expectations, you two! πŸ™‚

  8. Eileen @ Singing and Reading in the Rain

YES Ask Again Later was SOOO cute, I absolutely loved it! I’m reading Prisoner of Night and Fog right now and I’m not a very big fan so far, mainly because nothing’s really happened in the first half, but I definitely LOVE the World War II concept and how Hitler’s motivations are kind of explained in it. I also agree about Love Letters to the Dead (I was approved on NG for that one but it was archived literally days before I was going to read it :(), The Murder Complex, and Ask About Alice! Thanks for sharing, girlies! <33

  9. Lisa (Lost in Literature)

Jenni: I hope you’re loving Ask Again Later. I thought it was so cute. Silly, but cute. πŸ™‚

Giselle: Wow, I haven’t heard of a single one of these yet! Thanks for bringing them to my attention. Pointe sounds like something I would enjoy, as long as I’m in the right mood for it. Otherwise I may be left sobbing uncontrollably. >.<

    Thanks for sharing, ladies!

  10. Bonnie

Something Real and Prisoner of Night and Fog are high on my anticipated debuts for the year as well! I hadn’t read the blurb for Beware the Wild before but am adding that to the list, definitely! Great picks. πŸ™‚

  11. Faye @ The Social Potato

Kyaaa! These books and covers look so pretteh ;_; I’m definitely looking forward to The Truth About Alice, Ask Again Later, The Wicked We Have Done, Love Letter to the Dead and Prisoner of Night and Fog! πŸ˜€ I do have three of those as ARCs, so I’ll be getting them soon. Hopefully I love them enough to buy my own hardcovers <3

  12. Aylee

Yup, it would be hard to narrow the list down to so few, but I think you ladies did a great job. I’m especially looking forward to Love Letters to the Dead because a) I’ve been hearing good things and b) I felt the same when I read the blurb, and The Murder Complex because I love The Dust Lands series so hard.

  13. Michelle

I love debuts!! And I love your picks!! The Merciless is one I am definitely excited for… as well as Ask Again Later, The Murder Complex, and The Truth About Alice. I’m reading Love Letters to the Dead now and it’s Meh. Kinda disappointing πŸ™

I am really looking forward to these too!! I loved Something Real. I can’t wait to read The Truth About Alice and Love Letters To the Dead.
