Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish where we list top bookish things.
Note that Giselle and Jenni often decide to split it and each do a Top 5.

All of the author love fails!

Jenni

JohnGreenXR Dessen Rowling ReadXR RothXR

  • John Green: I bought The Fault in Our Stars last year with full intent of jumping right into it but then life changed and the story began to hit too close to home so I just haven’t gotten around to picking it up yet. I know this is unacceptable and I could pick up one of his other novels but I just haven’t.
  • Sarah Dessen: I have 6 of this woman’s novels on my shelf and I have not even picked one of them up. FAIL.
  • J.K. Rowling: Ok, please don’t throw stuff at me *hides* Β Harry Potter has just never interested me, neither have her recent adult novels.
  • Richelle Mead: In my defence I did buy the box set of the VA series a few weeks ago and I do intend to get to them when I have time for some ME reading.
  • Veronica Roth: Once again, I have all of her books, just haven’t read them. Β I do want to read Divergent before the movie comes out, but that probably won’t happen.

KingXR DashnerXR BethXR KagawaXR VincentXR

My list isn’t as tragic as Jenni’s (I mean c’mon, girl!), but Stephen King alone is a pretty big fail on my horror-loving part! >.<

  • Stephen King: I know, I know! Major fail for me here who claims is a huge horror fan, huh? I have watched a large number of his movies, but his books have always intimidated me seeing as they all have a million pages. But one day I will get out of this funk >.<
  • James Dashner: I have been wanting to read The Maze Runner for like a thousand years and I just… haven’t! And there’s a movie out now right? Or out soon? Eep!
  • Beth Ravis: I think this is the first author I told myself I would read ASAP when I started my blog. Everyone and their dog was recommending it to me and it does sound so good and the reviews are amazing! Maybe I will audiobook this bugger soon! I love to use audiobooks for my long-time TBR residents!
  • Julie Kagawa: It’s funny that she’s in this list because I’m pretty sure I own all of her books! I have the first 3 Iron Fey books at home, and I own eBooks of both Immortal Rules book, and even Grim from Netgalley. I also met her at BEA, she’s so sweet and awesome and charismatic!
  • Rachel Vincent: I also own a lot of Vincent’s books. At least the first 3 Soul Screamers and Amy (Book Loving Mom) just got me her Blood Bound trilogy last Christmas. I have heard amazing things about all of her series!

Does our lists make you ashamed of us? >.<
What authors would be on yours?

Jenni, you need to get into Sarah Dessen! She’s amazeballs! πŸ˜€
I can’t comment on John Green because while I’ve read The Fault in Our Stars, I’ve read nothing else by him, and nor any of your other choices, whoops.
Giselle, I’d definitely try out Kagawa soon, before people throw things, because she’s well well loved, and I’ve read Beth Revis’ Across the Universe, and it just didn’t impress me hugely, quite a shame really, but I haven’t read any other authors you’ve mentioned either. Shame on us..
    Great list though girls πŸ™‚

  2. Shayna Varadeaux

Jenni I am determined to read The Fault In Our Stars this month! (fingers crossed!) I have two Sarah Dessen Books I haven’t read as well! I want to… I just haven’t had the time! As for Vampire Academy, the books are amazing and one of my favorite series, so good! Divergent Trilogy is awesome! I haven’t been able to get into J.K. Rowling either, the movies were great though. πŸ™‚

Giselle I have reads some Stephen King but definitely not enough I have so many of his books on my own TBR… *sigh* I have wanted to read Maze Runner forever and have yet to accomplish that one. I actually haven’t read Beth revis, Julie Kagawa or Rachel Vincent! I have wanted to… just haven’t.

My personal fails would be Ally Condie, Matched is sitting on my end table mocking me everyday. LOL. In that stack of my “I want to read ASAP pile” under Matched BTW is Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games has eluded me thus far but I plan on reading all three books before Mocking Jay comes out in theaters. Leigh Bardugo is one I have been dying to read but I got Shadow and Bone yesterday so i am headed in the right direction I suppose. Claudia Gray is one I have wanted to read for years now and my kids have read the Evernight books but I haven’t gotten to them yet. Cynthia Hand is another.

LOL! I am getting depressed over here, Epic fail! I am not looking at my bookshelf anymore LOL! Have a great day ladies!

    • Giselle

Oh Allie Condie could have made my list too I haven’t tried her yet but my cousin loved the trilogy I really want to read it. I can’t believe you haven’t read THG! Actually I wish I was you so I could read that series for the first time again!! I think I tried Claudia Gray and didn’t like it – but I’ll have to check if it’s actually her I’m thinking of lol. I think this TTT topic makes us all feel like reading failures! >.<

  3. Jessica @ Rabid Reads

I have four Maze Runner books sitting on a bookshelf that I haven’t even touched. I have a few of the others too, but not in their entirety. Wouldn’t it be nice to have enough time to READ ALL THE BOOKS (Hyperbole and a Half, anyone?)?

  4. Nick @ Nick's Book Blog

I’m with you, Jenni. Harry Potter has never interested me either. It just wasn’t my kind of book when the first book came out and I’ve watched the first movie and there’s just too much going on for me to enjoy.
I highly recommend Richelle Mead’s VA series though. I think you would like Rose for her spunky attitude. As for V Roth, I honestly don’t think she’s your kind of author, but still give it a shot and see.

Giselle, you must read Julie Kagawa! Especially her vampire series! It’s so good and I think you would love it.
I’ve read a couple of Stephen King and have really enjoyed them, so I recommend wholeheartedly and yes, you being a horror fan and all will most definitely enjoy it.

    Great post, ladies!

    • Giselle

I do think I’d like her Immortal Rules – especially that Jenni DNFed it and that’s a sign I’ll love it haha (for real though! O_O). Stephen King – One day I will take the dive. His books are SOOOO long though it’s so intimidating!

  5. Leanna

Stephen King, Giselle! :O You really need to fix that! That said, I have read King in years. I read all his books when I was a teen. I want to read Doctor Sleep, though.

I’m with you on John Green, Jenni. I haven’t read him either. You are in for a treat with that VA box set!

  6. Tina

Jenni: I’ve read every single book by every single author on your list except Rachel Mead but I am totally making my way to finishing them! Almost done Vampire Academy!

Giselle: I’ve read some Stephen King (I do need to read more, but I read until I fall asleep at night and sometimes get nightmares from his books haha) and I’ve read the Maze Runner series but that’s it! I’ll check out those authors asap!

  7. Tiffany

I finally read the Harry Potter series last year after not being interested for years. It never interested me and I listened to them because I really like the guy who read them. They are good, but really not my type, so I TOTALLY understand.

  8. Nereyda @Mostly YA Book Obsessed

I keep telling myself I will read The Fault in Our Stars one of these days but i just don’t think I do it. And the movie! Aghhh, just watching the preview made me cry and I am NOT a cryer!
I’ve never read anything by Sarah Dessen either, Or JK Rowling #wefailtogether
In my defense I saw the movies and I can’t read books AFTER I’ve already seen the movi…
I loooooove Richelle Mead! My favoritest author ever! VA is awesome, but not as awesome as her adult paranormal series (Georgina Kincaid). That series is EPIC!
I just listened to Divergent and Insurgent on audio and really liked them.
I’ve read Across the Universe and back then I thought it was really unique.
I haven’t read anything the Iron Fey books yet. I have them all on my kindle AND I have the boxed sex. I did read The Immortal Rules and it was good.
I always forget about Rachel Vincent. I’ll have to see if her books are on audio.
    Great list girls!

    • Giselle

Ha I’m the same if I watch the movie I never want to read the book though I did with Twilight – I watched the 1st movie and read it right away afterwards and it was kind of cool to be able to put faces on the characters. I so have to read Georgina Kincaid! I heard it was fab!

      • Nereyda @Mostly YA Book Obsessed

I read a book after the movie and was so damn confused by all the damn changes. Never again! Which is why I just read the Divergent books since the movie is almost out.
Ah, and Georgie! Ive read the series a few times but I’m doing the audiobooks next week for the readathon. I loves Georgie!

I agree that I think you would really like The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa πŸ™‚

  9. Bonnie

I haven’t read Sarah Dessen and John Green either! I’m not a big contemporary fan so that’s my excuse. Richelle Mead’s VA series was a lot of fun but I still need to read her adult series’.
Wow, you haven’t read any Stephen King, Giselle?? I could’ve swore you had. lol I only started recently (last few years) but Carrie, The Shining and Salem’s Lot are good (and NOT huge!) For Kagawa you should read her vampire series first.

  10. Kat (AussieZombie)

*hugs Jenni* – I love that I am not alone in not having read Harry Potter (and not having an urge to either). We black sheep must stick together!

Giselle – I am speechless that you haven’t read Stephen King! I’ve read some of his chunksters, and although the size IS intimidating, they are so addictive I read them far more quickly than some 200 pagers…… The Stand and Under the Dome are two of my faves πŸ˜€

  11. Siiri

I did really enjoy Divergent, but for some reason I have never picked the sequels up. They’re now with a friend of mine so I won’t get to read them for a while. RICHELLE MEAD IS A MUST. Do not expect great things from book 1 & 2–then you’ll probably like them more πŸ˜€ but the rest of it? WOWZAA. Love that series so much. We have Sarah and John in common, Jenni:) And HP is scandalous! *gasps* you have seen the movies though, RIGHT? πŸ˜€ Giselle, I’m surprised you haven’t read Stephen King. As you said, you love horror. I’m best running away from it lol. DYLAN O’BRIEN *sobs* if he brought his a-game like he does with Teen Wolf’s season 3 then TMR movie couldn’t be in better hands. Across the Universe was 4 stars for me, but the sequel? I’ve been in the middle of this for a year and I don’t plan on finishing it any time soon. Julie Kagawa’s world building is marvellous and I love her Iron Fey series. The Soul Screamers? Ehh.. I own all of the books in paperbak, but they’re all like 3-3.5 stars for me. I haven’t read past 3 though so I’ll have to correct that soon. Great list, ladies πŸ˜€

  12. ShootingStarsMag

Aw, no J.K. Rowling? LOL that’s okay…she’s not for everyone. I just grew up with her HP books and love her. I haven’t read anything by Sarah Dessen either.

I’ve read one Stephen King novel – Misery – but I am curious about some of his others.

  13. Jenea @ Books Live Forever

I have so many wonderful reviews for The Fault in Our Stars, but it is one that I can not bring myself to read. I lost both of my parents to Cancer, so it hits to close to home for me. I don’t think I would be able to make it through it. I would like to read The Maze Runner and Sarah Dressen’s books.

  14. Brittany

Might make me a little ashamed of you guys. πŸ˜›
No seriously, so many fantastic authors out there, you’re just bound to miss some of the more popular ones.
So many of the above authors are my favourites.
Maybe pick up a Dessen book this summer Jenni. She makes such perfect books for then.
    Happy TTT ladies!

  15. Kathy @ I Write, I Read, I Review

@ Jenni: I don’t necessarily think the Harry Potter thing is tragic. If you’re genuinely not interested, then you’re not. However, I do recall back when they came out (I feel old…) I kept glancing at them and thinking of getting the first one and then kept not doing it because I was in my last year of high school and thought “It’s just a kids book.” Then my parents bought them for my younger brother Shawn and he was like, “Read this. Now.” *laughs* I really like the earlier books in the series but my enjoyment of it dampens later. (How are those for fighting words? *laughs, shakes head*) It would be interesting to see what you thought if you checked them out, but if you don’t I can totally get that. Life’s too short for books we don’t genuinely want to read!

As for Divergent, I loved the first book in that trilogy. I have Insurgent around here somewhere but just never got to it. As for Aligent, (I think I spelled that right?) I’m a wuss and I still don’t know if I’ll touch it.

@ Giselle: The Iron King is a fabulous novel. But to be truthful, I’m not much better than you where Julie Kagawa is concerned. I have the rest of the series, read The Iron King over two years ago, and never continued. I keep meaning to go back, but that’s NOT my strong suit at all. So many new books keep tempting me!

As for Rachel Vincent? Here stuff is awesome! I’ve read the first three books in her Soul Screamers series and really enjoyed them. This is a situation where I *will* get back to the series. I actually use her books when I’m in jeopardy of a slump and need something I know I’ll like. She hasn’t disappointed me yet.

Authors I Haven’t Read That Might Surprise You:

    — Miranda Kenneally: I started Catching Jordan back in fall 2012 but my wrist suffered an injury and holding a book was painful so I only got about half way through. I *hate* restarting books. It’s far enough back now that I really should, though, because what I did read I enjoyed.

    — Brigid Kemmerer: I have this but haven’t touched it yet. You’d think I would have jumped all over it ages ago, but it keeps getting moved around on my shelf, rather than read.

    — Katie McGarry: I bought Pushing The Limits back when it released and promptly loaned it to my brother’s girlfriend. She (not so promptly) didn’t return it for over a year, and I hate buying things twice. Lesson learned there, but I still haven’t read it (or, because of this, any of her other books). Shame.

    • Giselle

Eep I loved Miranda’s books so hard! I know what you mean about hating to start a book over though! But that one is totally worth it! And I also Love Brigid and Katie’s books too!

  16. Alice

Ahhh Jenni I can’t believe you haven’t read any of John Green’s books yet! That’s just crazy. I really hope you get around to reading The Fault in Our Stars at least before the movie comes out. πŸ™‚ YOU HAVEN’T READ J.K. ROWLING EITHER? Sigh.

Giselle I’m similar to you in terms of what popular authors you haven’t read yet (though I have read Julie Kagawa – and I adore her books!). I’m hoping to get around to reading these sometime soon.

  17. Eileen @ Singing and Reading in the Rain

*throws stuff at Jenni anyway* Harry Potter is my childhood! I actually used be afraid of reading the books because I saw a small clip of the movie where Ron started throwing up bugs and was scarred for life afterwards, but then my dad forced me to read it, despite how scared shitless I was, and I ended up devouring the entire series in two weeks! It’s such a classic, and one time, a classmate said, “I haven’t read Harry Potter” and I immediately screamed, “YOU HAVEN’T READ HARRY POTTER THAT’S LIKE A CLASSIC!” and the entire class was like “why is this psychopath here get her away.”

Giselle, omg Julie is adorable! I feel like a lot of people won’t like her books if they read it right now, because by now a lot of the plot devices that were unique back then have been clichΓ©s now, which may be a little unfortunate. But still, I hope you really like it if you read it! The Maze Runner movie is actually coming out this year I thought! I haven’t seen a trailer for it yet, though, so I don’t really know if the date got pushed back or I just missed it.

    Fantastic list, ladies! <33

    • Giselle

*Throws stuff at Jenni with you* THIS IS SO MUCH FUN!

I feel like her Iron Fey series won’t be as good for me as it was for so many who read it way back for that reason. I waited to long WAAAAH!

  18. kimbacaffeinate

King? Rowling? Kagawa? *flails arms* but, but I love them. To be honest I did not read the Iron Fey series, although I own all of them. I love her Blood of Eden series. And Potter, Jenni did you even try them? I think because my children grew up around them they are special to me. We read them to our kids, then gradually they read them to us. When each movie released we went and saw them together. For the last one my daughter came home from college to attend with us. Of course when they ended I cried. Now Giselle did you actually try reading the Shining or do his books and their size keep from trying? LOL Some of these authors like Rachel, Green and Ravis I have not tried.

    • Giselle

I’m so excited to read the HP series to my kid when he’s a bit older! And no I never even tried any of King’s books. I only put The Shining on his pic bc it seems to be the most popular. But yes, when I did have the urge to try one I saw how many pages it had and I was like.. eh maybe another day Lol! I have watched a ton of the movies though – Carrie is my favorite.

  19. Lauren

Haha, no your lists don’t make me ashamed of you, because I’m sure if I made a list, mine would be embarrassing! πŸ™‚ Instead I’m jealous that you gals get to experience these authors for the first time. Especially Stephen King and JK Rowling. I hope you’ll do reviews of whichever books you start with, I’d love to hear what you think of them!

  20. Aimee

I’ve read from all of these authors except for Stephen King!

Jenni: I’m not so sure about John Green. I’ve read three novels by him and cried in two of those. I like how he seems to make readers cry, but the stories themselves aren’t that interesting for me. I’ve read I think three of Dessen’s novels and thought they were all just in the ‘okay’ zone for me. I haven’t finished the Harry Potter series yet. D: I’ve read the first three and they were really good, but the size of the fourth is intimidating me, lol! The Vampire Academy series is absolutely wonderful! There’s an amazing heroine with a hot hero. I hope you love it! Divergent was okay. It was good, but kinda overrated, in my opinion.

Giselle: The Maze Runner was an enjoyable read for me, but it seems to be one of those love/hate kind of books for others. Across the Universe was soooo lovely. The ending was fantastic as well. I love Julie Kagawa and really consider her to be one of my favorite authors. Her Blood of Eden series is exquisite and even better than the Iron Fey. My Soul to Take was… okay. I hated the hero. πŸ™

    Thanks for sharing, girls!

  21. Faye

I have read all of Louisa May Alcott’s books except Little Women (and its sequels.) Never was really interested in that one, but some of her others are among my favorites.

  22. Melliane

WHAT a shame!!! ok no, I won’t tell a thing because even if I’ve read some of your authors there are many I haven’t either even if I actually have the book. *sigh* one day! yes! one day!

  23. Cait @ Notebook Sisters

JENNI YOU HAVEN’T READ JOHN GREEN?!!! YOU NEED TO FIX THIS. πŸ˜‰ He’s writing is particularly amazing and the characters….totally heart-breaking. He’s a definite must.

And Giselle, you and me both for James Dashner and Beth Revis (gee, I never spell her last name right. I always spell it “Rivis” or “Ravis”…it’s not that hard! What is wrong with my crazy head! XD)

  24. Lolita

From Jenni’s list I have read Jk Rowling, Richelle Mead and Veronica Roth, but haven’t read books form the other two authors. I really love Mead her vampire academy series and the spin-off is really good too. I only haven’t read her dystopia book yet, even though I do own it.

From Giselle her list I haven’t read books by most of those authors, I only have read books by Rachel Vincent. And she’s one of my favourite authors. I have read almost all her books and enjoyed them. Although I was a bit disapointed by thelast two soul screamers books. I do own The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa, but haven’t read it yet.

  25. Mel@thedailyprophecy

These posts make me happy, because I don’t feel so behind anymore, haha. I really had the idea I’m running behind everyone, but seeing even you guys haven’t read some popular authors πŸ˜€ I definitely recommend The immortal rules from Kagawa and of course HP!

  26. Amy @ Book Loving Mom

I love your list girls. Jenni, I haven’t read Sarah Dessen or John Green either. And even though I am a HUGE HP fan, so what that you haven’t read them. It’s not your thing, so you probably wouldn’t enjoy them the way that people who like that type of story do. (I do think you would end up liking it, but I don’t think you would fall in love with it.) I read the first book when I was like 18 and I think only 2 or 3 books were out at that time so I actually had to wait for each one. I think that made me more excited and NEED the next one ASAP.

Giselle, I have the first two books in the Across the Universe series (I refuse to get the last one because I am pissed they changed the covers) and I still haven’t read her either. I can’t believe you haven’t read Stephen King!! And I really think you will love Rachel Vincent. I should have bought you the Shifters series. That’s my favorite of hers. πŸ™‚

  27. Alexa

Jenni you must read a Sarah Dessen book, she is the queen of YA contemps. Also Harry Potter is awesome you should at least give it a chance.

Giselle I’m glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t read the Iron Fey series. I own most of the books in the series but never got around to reading it.

  28. Pili

I haven’t read any John Green or Rachel Vincent yet… I have only read one Stephen King book Hearts in Atlantis and I’m hoping to start the Dark Tower series soon.
