Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish where we list top bookish things.
Note that Giselle and Jenni often decide to split it and each do a Top 5.

Originality is not dead yet!

Now I didn’t go through ALL of the books I read, so these are just the first ones that came to mind for this week’s Top 10 Tuesday. And yep, it’s just me this week! J-dog isn’t feeling her best.

TT1 TT3 TT4 TT5 TT2

  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor: The world inside this novel is insanely creative, but the characters, the twists, the story, are all so unique. I would love to get a glimpse inside this woman’s mind!
  • All the Truth That’s in Me by Julie Berry: Even though I didn’t love this book as much as many others, it still stands out with its unique storytelling style. I can say I have never read a book narrated quite like this before!
  • Drowning Instinct by Ilsa J. Bick: I read this one 2 years ago, and I still remember it very clearly – so that’s saying something if you know me! >.< This book is so very different. It’s one of those that leaves you thinking about it for days and weeks afterwards, to make sense of what you read and your feelings toward it.
  • Ready Player One by Ernest Cline: This is one where the world itself really stands out from any other futuristic worlds/dystopians I’ve read. It’s all created using a gaming system that you can literally escape to and live your whole life in. I can’t even give it justice with just a few sentences it’s one you have to see for yourself!
  • Don’t You Forget About Me by Kate Karyus Quinn: I love mind-f*ck books and this one gave me one hell of a ride! I do think it will be a book that needs a certain kind of reader to appreciate its level of weirdness, but I loved every minute of it!

TT12Β TT7 TT8 TT9 TT11

  • Cress by Marissa Meyer: No explanation is really needed for this one – I mean you have all read it, right? >.< Hello:Β cyborg Cinderella!
  • Antigoddess by Kendare Blake: Kendare is easily one of my fav authors and she takes on such a unique premise involving Greek gods with this one!
  • Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge: This is another one I didn’t absolutely love but I still appreciated the unique world that it was set in – it was kind of mind-blowing at times!
  • Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling: Even though there have been countless copy-cats… nice try, but there is no matching Harry Potter’s level of originality and overall epicness!

What are some of the most unique books you’ve read?

Such a good list Giselle! I have Antigoddess and really want to get to it soon, and I seriously need to get to Cinder because everyone loves it! I’d love to read All the Truth That’s in Me too, and that cover, holy cow! Hope Jenni feels better soon too πŸ™‚

    • Giselle

Ooh you so have to read Cinder! That whole series is so unique and just very well done from characters to the world itself. I also love the cover for All the Truth That’s in Me! It’s why I wanted to read it from the first time I saw it haha. Yes I totally judge by the cover >.<

  2. Pili

I totally agree with Daughter of Smoke & Bone! When I read the title of this week’s TTT that was actually the first book that came to mind!

  3. Nick @ Nick's Book Blog

I agree with you Jenni on Cinder. It was such a unique book when I first read it and the series itself is just unique and so different from every other YA book out there.
Cruel Beauty wasn’t entirely unique when I read it because I had already Of Beast and Beauty last year which by the way was phenomenal. It has such an interesting setting and the main character is also blind! I think you should give that one a shot, Jenni. πŸ™‚

Giselle, I’m ashamed to say this but the only book I’ve read in your list is Daughter of Smoke and Bone and I agree it was pretty unique. I do want to read a book by Quinn though since both her books are featured in your lists!

    Thanks for sharing! πŸ™‚

Ready Player One and Cinder are on my to-read list. I have read Daughtr of Smoke and Bone and the Harry Potter series and agree that they are pretty unique. The first fews book that spring into my mind when I think about unique books are the Nogiku series and Face Time by SJ Pajonas, both are so original and unique and I love them!

    • Giselle

Ready Player One is sooo different especially considering it’s a dystopian/futuristic book where it looks like everything has been done. It was also fantastic on audio if you do audiobooks. Face Time looks like something I would like I’ll add it to my list! πŸ™‚

“Originality is not dead yet!” Haha, I love that. I loved the gaming system/world in Ready Player One too, and would totally visit it πŸ™‚ Turning Cinderella into a cyborg is certainly one original idea as well – a super cool one.
And Harry Potter is just Harry Potter.

    • Giselle

Harry Potter is just awesome! πŸ˜€ and I would so live in the Ready Player One world too I loved the concept and how thought provoking it is too!

I freakin loved Ready Player One. Great pick. I am also very partial to Harry Potter, but that’s partially because it was my prison nickname. I don’t think I look much like Harry Potter, but I did two years in prison for drugs and everyone there was convinced I was Daniel Radcliffe’s doppelganger. Here’s mine.

I’ve got Cinder on my list this week too. It really was a unique book and I really expect to see it on many lists. Thanks to you saying Cruel Beauty has a unique world, even if you didn’t enjoy it as much as you could have, I’m really curious now. (I’ve got it on my shelf and I plan to read it later this month any way.

Oh, I still remember you raving about the originality of All the Truth That’s In Me and I think that DoS&B should be on everyone’s lists today πŸ˜€ That’s one of the most unique stuff I have ever read. HARRY POTTER :’) and yes, The Lunar Chronicles is just so freakin unique! I’ve still to read Cruel Beauty, but even though some people in addition to you didn’t enjoy this one immensly, I’m still so very intrigued by it and I can’t wait to tackle this unique story. My picks in this category always include Maggie Stiefvater’s books as well thanks to her gorgeous writing.

  9. Maya

I’ve only read All the Truth That’s in Me and Harry Potter from this list but definitely agree that they’re pretty unique! I also have Daughter of Smoke & Bone on my TBR pile and can’t wait to read it πŸ˜‰

  10. Roro

Aaah all these books are on my wish list ( except cruel beauty because I already have a copy )

I hope to read them some day ^^

YES! Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Cruel Beauty, and Cinder are some of my favorites, and they’re so original and not afraid to go their own way. Fantastic list, and I have a few books I clearly need to add to my TBR pile from this post.

  13. Melliane

ah Harry Potter! It Had to be here lol! I haven’t read the others (shame on me), but I have Cinder and I can’t wait to start it!

  14. Melanie (YA Midnight Reads)

nooo my comment disappeared ;___; Anyway. YES to All The Truth That’s In Me and Daughter of Smoke and Bone! Both were so beautifully written and ATTTIM had such a unique way of telling the story.

    Brilliant list! <33

I love books that mess with your mind as well and will definitely be having a look at ‘Don’t Forget Me’ by Kate Karyus Quinn. Thanks for sharing!

  16. Amy @ Book Loving Mom

Great list!! I have read a few of those, but really need to read the others. I should start with Antigoddess since you rock and bought it for me for Xmas!! I have actually kept it in my stack of books downstairs to read instead of putting it on my shelves so it’s right there when I am ready for it lol!! I have Don’t You Forget About Me for review and need to get to it soon too.
