  • The Fault In Our Stars by John Green: Clearly I believe in starting out with a bang because holy emotion, Batman.  I think the romance between Augustus and Hazel is just so fantastic and I want everyone to have a glimpse of it.
  • Breathe, Annie, Breathe by Miranda Kenneally: Basically what my co-blogger has said down below! I think that everyone should get to experience The Kenneally Feeling at least once in their life and this newest in the series was by far my favourite.
  • Easy by Tammara Webber: I think this one has a relationship that pretty much anyone can fall for. I loved Lucas so much and it was the first romancey novel I had read that really featured the flaws in the characters and them working through all of that (I don’t read a lot of romance, in case you couldn’t tell from that previous sentence!)
  • Everything Leads to You by Nina Lacour: There is just so damn much to love about this novel. You get a really unique look at the movie industry, a really good romance and fantastic characters.  To me this one could be a home run for anyone!

  • Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Ashey: For someone who likes a bit of a more serious/dark tone this is the one I often recommend to my friends. It was one of my first contemps too, actually!
  • Perfect Escape by Jennifer Brown: Everyone needs to read at least one road trip book, and while there are a few others that I would also recommend, this is one of my favorites. Anything by Jennifer Brown could be on this list, though!
  • Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins: For more romance-oriented readers this is one I often lend out or tell them to buy. My copy is actually at a friend’s house right now! And with that said, I suck for not having read the others in this series >.<
  • This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales: This is one that has a lot of heart, and it’s such an easily readable novel that it’s one of the first I thought of for this list. It’s one that many could relate to as well, and I loved the range of emotion.

What are some of your favorite contemps you’d recommend?

I agree! Miranda Kenneally is an author everyone has to experience at least once. As is Melina Marchetta. I have only read On Jellicoe Road, but I have yet to read anything else. I have Saving Fransesca which I should be reading soon.

I haven’t read Jennifer Brown yet, but I’ve heard so many good things about her writing, especially from you guys.

Hannah Harrington is another author I think every newbie should try! She’s brilliant. 🙂

    Great list! 🙂

  2. Rachel

There’s one or two contemporaries on my list today – I use them mostly for feel-good easy reads when I’m in a slump! Great list, and a few added to my TBR today!

I really like contemporary but there’s a bunch on there that I have yet to read. Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson and Just Listen by Sarah Dessen are two others I loved that I think people should read 🙂

  4. Eileen @ BookCatPin

I’ve read a few books from your lists like Easy and Anna and the French Kiss. I really enjoyed them 🙂 Jellicoe Road is one that I haven’t read but I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy!!

A little embarassed to say that I’ve only read one of the books on this list though almost all of them are on my TBR list. Summer is always a good time for me to read contemps though so I may try to get to a few of these this month.

I’m a huge contemporary fan, but totally wanted to see which other books I had been missing out on. I’ve loved every single one of Kenneally’s books that I’ve read, so I’m glad that I still have Breathe Annie Breathe to look forward to. I also have copies of Thirteen Reasons Why and Everything Leads to You, so I’m glad that they made it to your list too! Brilliant lists ladies! 🙂

I looove contemporary, but I mostly read NA! However, I’ve been foraying into the genre of YA contemps more often. I actually just finished reading Anna and the French Kiss, which I really enjoyed. Easy packed a powerful punch, and I think everyone should read it. Great list! 🙂

I almost feel like all teens should HAVE to read Thirteen Reasons Why. That book was just so awesome. I also enjoyed Anna and the French Kiss, as well as The Fault in our Stars. Great list!

  9. Amber @ YA Indulgences

I love contemporary novels. Great lists. I’ve read a couple of these books (The Fault In Our Stars and Anna and The French Kiss), both of the books made my own list. This Song Will Save Your Life is a book I’ve been crazy about reading. Next month hopefully I’ll be able to read it. *crosses fingers* Everything Leads To You, Perfect Escape and Thirteen Reasons Why are books I’ve been wanting to read too.

Awesome picks! I totally agree with them all! Except for Jellicoe Road … sorry, Jenni. I just didn’t like it that much! Maybe because I listened to the audio. LOVED This Song Will Save Your Life and Anna and the French Kiss! Now I want to reread them both!

  11. Lyn Kaye

I feel that Thirteen Reasons Why doesn’t get a lot of love. I adored that book!

Jenni, I suppose I need to break down and read Everything Leads To You.
