The Five Stages of a Book Slump

Posted by

I have a shameful secret. I’ve sorta of been in a book slump these past couple weeks. I am still reading but nothing really calls out to me and I’d honestly rather just watch TV than read a book. I wonder if its because I have a craving for a certain kind of book and cannot find something that fits the bill or if its just because I am extremely exhausted (emotionally & mentally) and don’t want to do anything anymore.

1. No book looks good.

You’ve tried starting five but have DNFed 10. Will a book ever look good again?

2. So you start watching TV.

You are now 6 seasons deep into a show you started 3 days ago, with no end in sight. Will this be over? Will you ever feel like reading again? *are you still watching* YES I AM, NETFLIX. STOP JUDGING ME.

3. Maybe it’s time to accept that this is your life.

You are never going to read a good book again. You’re never going to read. PERIOD. Time to unsubscribe to those newspapers and magazines as well, then.

4. But then you remember your favorites books.

Maybe re-reading will help you out of that slump? The stories of your favorite literary children can always be useful. *screams in Marchetta*

5. And maybe that does help you…

This last stage is purposefully vague because, I am not quite there yet so I feel like I’d be lying if I said being reunited with my favorite literary children was the solution? It did make me feel better though. Right now I am still at stage 2/3 because I am knee deep in a binge watch.

Have you suffered from book slumps before? How do you usually get out of them? Help a bud outttt

The following two tabs change content below.
Rashika has been tired since 2013. There are very few things that spark joy for her besides a nice cup of tea, warm, baked goods, good books and good TV shows. She is here to pile onto your giant TBRs and to-watch lists. Offer her a cookie and she might be nice to you.

Yeah! I usually binge read romance but haven’t really found one right now that is calling out to me. It’s SO BAD. I did finish a book last night but it didn’t really help the slump?

Stage 1 is the worst! Just all this despair about never finding a book again – I can spend DAYS on Goodreads trying to find anything that looks interesting. 🙂 I also have this side stage where I get inexplicably jealous of anyone reading a good book – I want one too 🙂 Great post!

omg I feel that so much. I’ve spent so so so much time in my lifetime scouring through Goodreads List for my next book and never seem to find any when I am in a book slump. I have over a 1000 books on my to-read list and yet none of them even sound good when I am in a slump.

ALSO I FEEL THAT SIDE STAGE. LOL.

      Thanks 🙂

Great post. I like to red kids books and graphic novels or comics to get out of slumps. They are short and mostly pictures and really inspire me to pick up longer books.

I actually read picture books when I am stressed sometimes? I don’t have access to them right now so I cannot really do that but I just recently finished finals and all I read that week was picture books. I had a stack by my bed and would flip through when I needed to unwind. It was the BEST.

ugh book hangovers also suck so much. I think I’ve had much better luck with that this year (although maybe I am not reading as many good books??) Whenever I read a book that was really good, I would read another really good one. In Nov, I read Letters to the Lost and All the Wind in the World back to back and those books both just hit a mark with me and I haven’t read anything that really stuck, since then? But actually, I take back what I said because that sounds like a book hangover turned into a slump. EL OH EL.

Dude I am IN A READING SLUMP TOO. Kind of. But yeah I definitely am spending most of my time watching BK99 like NOW, and I don’t know not reading…ugh. I’ll get back into it sometime soon.
