Hello there! A few weekends ago Stella (It’s Too Late To Apologize) and I ventured out of our reading caves to go and see the Divergent movie. Once it ended we went back to her place and filmed a joint review of it. Now, what is a little unique about this vlog review is that Stella has read the Divergent series and I haven’t read any of the books. You get the perspectives from each camp and see how it worked without having read the book. It ran a bit long because we had a lot to say but please let us know what you thought! Oh yeah, YAY FOR BOOK TO MOVIE ADAPTATIONS!

the movie was messed up they missed all the details in the book needed for the next movie. but overall as a movie it was great, it suched compared to the book.

Yeah, that was something Stella pointed out. There was no mention of the hard drive that Tris had on the train at the end. For someone who never read the books it looked like they were going to find out what was outside the wall in the next instalment, but I guess that doesn’t happen until later in the trilogy. Thanks for leaving your thoughts!

I found they cut out all the character (drama) interactions between Tris and other characters. This really changed the tone of the story. Tris comes across a lot more calculating in the novel (I don’t mean that in a bad way). You lose that Al had a thing for Tris, Peter was the most hated character I can ever remember reading about (I hated him with the heat of a thousand suns) and the movie didn’t even scratch the surface of this hate, and Christina was trying to win challenges as well among with other characters that didn’t even get names in the movie. The movie had to cut a lot out but I still enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting! 🙂

Great video guys! I initially read Divergent when it first came out and I wasn’t a big fan (to tell you the truth, I am not sure what I didn’t like about it, but there was something), I reread it late last year and found that I enjoyed it WAY more.
But I actually really like the movie. I thought it did a good job translating Tris’ conflicting emotions regarding switching factions, and still loving her family (this was mostly Shailene). They stayed pretty true to the story- however that hard drive is a pretty important piece, I wonder how they’re going to figure that out.
I do have a theory on why they ended it the way they did. I don’t think they were certain that Insurgent and Allegiant were going to be picked up. They info didn’t come until after they (movie makers) saw how well Divergent did at the box office.
Anywho… those are my thoughts!
Jenni
That makes sense for why they ended it the way that they did! Shailene was so awesome in the movie. She’s a great actress!

I love love loved the movie. Now, I am pretty easy going when it comes to book to movie adaptions because they’re are done horrible a lot of the time, so I let some things go more than other people. But I LOVED this. Shailene Woodley did SO WELL. I love her, she is so gorgeous. To me, she gave Tris more life than in the book. The first book we are reading through Tris’s eyes so she doesn’t describe herself from an outsider’s view obviously, but seeing Tris in action was great. Shailene would do this giggle before she’d do any daring or crazy stunt and it was so cute and really brought new character to Tris. Four was sexy, that’s all I need to say. I didn’t mind the things they changed because I understood most was needed for this to make sense as a movie and ALSO because they weren’t even sure if there would be a second one so it needed to wrap up in case.
I really dislike Christina as a character, like a whole lot. And in the movie they made her much more likable. They didn’t show her taking the flag from Tris or any of her other selfish things from the book. But maybe that’s better, because I would prefer to like her than hate her haha
Jenni
Wow I had no idea that Christina was made much more unlikeable in the book. I thought she was pretty cute and a good friend in the movie.
I loved Shailene too! And Four is do sexy, it’s ridiculous really. Lol.
Also, I didn’t know that they hadn’t gotten the green light on the other movies by the time filming was done. Makes sense that it ended the way it did then I guess!

Haha! Love the title of this post. I loved the movie, but don’t know that I would have if I hadn’t read the book.
Jenni
I was surprised at how easily I was able to follow along and understand stuff even though I hadn’t read the book! Happy that you loved the movie too, Chelsea!

I have purposely avoided watching Divergent since I can’t see investing my time in the films since the books had such an awful ending (Imo)and also I really, really dislike Shailene Woodley when she tries to be a “serious” actress. Interesting to hear the perspectives from both camps though.
Jenni
Yeah, it seems that most people who read the books are pretty disappointed with the ending. I was very unsure of Shailene, she has a babyface that I didn’t know if I could take seriously. But I came out of the movie a new found fan of hers. I haven’t seen her in anything else so I can’t really compare though.
