5 Middle Grade Novels That Will Change Your Life

The Golden Compass changed my life when I was a kid and after more than a decade since the release of The Amber Spyglass, we are FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY getting a spin-off series that will hopefully cure me of the book-hangover I still have from reading The Amber Spyglass. I feel like middle grade is so constantly overlooked though so I decided I needed to do a post shouting out to my favorites!

1. Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell

This book has been out for a while but I didn’t read it until earlier this year after which, I promptly put it on my 2017 favorites shelf because it was SO AMAZING. It gave me The Thief Lord vibes but in Paris with violins and rooftops.

CATH CROWLEY is easily one of my fav authors and her words never fail to move me. Words in a Deep Blue was no different. The words in this book will make you cry, will make you laugh and most likely, the words in this book will change your life. Read it.

The Princess Bride Meets The Emperor’s New Groove: The Emperor’s Ostrich by Julie Berry

I feel like aesthetics for middle grade novels are fairly uncommon but The Emperor’s Ostrich is so laugh-out loud hilarious and really just lends itself to aesthetics. It’s got adventure, an unexpected romance (b/w a cow and an ostrich) & magic.

As the title of this post suggests, I believe that this book can best be described as The Princess Bride meets The Emperor’s New Groove. What happens when a spoilt man-child is on the verge of getting control of an entire empire? Why of course, he must be taught a lesson! Magic, mayhem and adventure ensue and a young dairy maid might be the answer to all. Basically, this book will make you LOL and draw you in for a ride. READ IT or give it to people who read middle grade. Seriously.

SDCC Blues: A Reading List + A Panel
