Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week:

Waiting on Wednesday (86)Darkest Fear by Cate Tiernan
Series: Birthright #1
Published by Simon Pulse on January 7th 2014
Genres: Paranormal, YA
Goodreads

Vivi’s animal instincts are her legacy—and maybe her downfall—in this start to a romantic fantasy series that will appeal to fans of The Nine Lives of Chloe King.

Vivi has known the truth about her family—and herself—since she was thirteen. But that doesn’t mean she’s accepted it. Being Haguari isn’t something she feels she’ll ever accept. How can she feel like anything but a freak knowing that it’s in her genes to turn into a jaguar?

Now eighteen, Vivi’s ready to break away from the traditions of her heritage. But all of that changes with the shocking, devastating deaths of her parents and the mysteries left behind. Vivi discovers family she never even knew she had, and a life open with possibility. New friends, new loyalties, and even romance all lay ahead—but so do dangers unlike anything Vivi ever could have imagined.

You know what I haven’t read lately and been really in the mood for? A good shifter/paranormal book! I remember enjoying a bunch of werewolf books for a while over a year ago and I miss it! There hasn’t been any that caught my eye but this one sounds like it could be awesome, especially seeing this is the author of a series that’s been recommended to me countless times, Immortal Beloved. So I’ll be sinking my teeth into this one for sure! (PS – feel free to rec me some good were/shifter books in the comments ;))

What are you waiting on?

Ooh look, Cate Tiernan’s coming out with a new series! I personally haven’t read anything by her but I hear that she rocks at paranormal stuff. Hopefully she can still pull off the werewolf/shapeshifter trend!

  2. Megan (Ink Skies)

First thought that came into mind: thank GOD it’s not a wolf. I don’t have anything against werewolf stories, but it’s nice to see some variety once in a while. Jaguar’s are awesome, and that cover is pretty cool, even if her left eye freaks me out a little. Thanks for putting this on my radar, Giselle!

  3. ShootingStarsMag

I don’t read a lot of werewolf/shifter novels actually. I suppose I should! I did read Immortal Beloved by this author though and loved it… really should re-read and finish the series. Nice to see something new from her!

  4. Mary @ BookSwarm

It’s been too long since I’ve read a GOOD YA shifter story. THere are a lot of adult ones but not so many YA ones. And this one sounds AWESOME! *adds to to-read list*

  5. Sam @ Realm of Fiction

Yeah, I’m really looking forward to this too! Although I haven’t completely loved all of Tiernan’s books in the past, I really enjoy the way she writes and think she is getting even better and better. I can’t wait to give this a try.

    Lovely pick, Giselle!

  6. Alice

Oh wow! That does sound amazing! I really enjoyed the TV adaptation of The Nine Lives of Chloe King when it came out so this definitely looks like a very good shifter/paranormal read. Great find Giselle! <3

  7. Siiri

I’m not usually the one to go all bonkers about a shifter book, but this one sounds really good. Plus the cover is gorgeous!!! Love this choice

  8. Caro @ The Book Rogue

This sounds awesome indeed. I’m not so into shifters, especially jaguars, but why not give it a try? I have a good feeling about this, somehow… oO
As for recommendations! I haven’t read the Shifters series by Rachel Vincent yet, but I’m going to after I finish with the Soul Screamers, and what I have found on quotes so far I’m pretty sure I’m gonna love them even more. Especially since they are a little more mature. Other then that, if you love some mystery and romance and shifting/vamps, I recommend books by Christine Feehan. People tend to say it’s kinda always the same story, but I enjoy her carpathians series very much. =)

I so agree Giselle, especially in the YA genres, there hasn’t been anything exciting in a while. If you read any adult I totally recommend Cecy Robson’s Weird Sisters series, book one is Sealed With A Curse:)

Loved your review of A Cursed Embrace. I am also a big fan of Cecy Robson’s series. Just to clarify, Ms. Robson’s series is called the “Weird Girls.” And it seriously ROCKS by the way. I believe the The Weird Sisters is a different series, and genre.

  10. Jackie

That cover is to die for! I haven’t heard of this one before….definetly gonna have to check this out! Nice pick

  11. Micheline @ Lunar Rainbows

Paranormals are freaking awesome aren’t they?! I’m trying to remember if I’ve read any shifter books where the shifters aren’t mixed in with other paranormal creatures and I honestly don’t think so! O.O I have a few on my TBR shelf like Shifters Series by Rachel Vincent – I’ve heard great things about that one! There’s also Moon Called by Patricia Briggs (the Mercy Thompson series) Great pick anyways 😀

I will read anything by Cate Tiernan. She is on my auto-buy and auto-read list. I LOVE LOVE her Sweep series and also loved her Immortal Beloved series! I’m sad this isn’t about witches but she’s done about that for her previous three series. Excited how she’ll handle shape shifters!
