A summer road trip changes everything in this unforgettable new tale from acclaimed author Katie McGarry

For new high school graduate Echo Emerson, a summer road trip out west with her boyfriend means getting away and forgetting what makes her so... different. It means seeing cool sights while selling her art at galleries along the way. And most of all, it means almost three months alone with Noah Hutchins, the hot, smart, soul-battered guy who’s never judged her. Echo and Noah share everything — except the one thing Echo’s just not ready for.

But when the source of Echo’s constant nightmares comes back into her life, she has to make some tough decisions about what she really wants — even as foster kid Noah’s search for his last remaining relatives forces them both to confront some serious truths about life, love, and themselves.

Now, with one week left before college orientation, jobs and real life, Echo must decide if Noah's more than the bad-boy fling everyone warned her he'd be. And the last leg of an amazing road trip will turn... seriously epic.

Songs that influenced Breaking the Rules

Breaking the Rules was a very emotional journey for me to write. At the same time, there were so many wonderful, sigh worthy moments between Echo and Noah that I never wanted the story to end.

To show the extremes of emotions of the story, here are two songs that heavily influenced Breaking the Rules.

The emotional side: “Try” by P!nk

Loving isn’t always easy and neither is trusting. At times, we hurt the people we love the most, even if we don’t mean to. Echo and Noah go through this in Breaking the Rules. They have to figure each out as individuals within the couple. Echo and Noah share explosive chemistry, but at times, that passion can turn into emotional conversations that aren’t easy to have.

The sigh worthy moments: “One of Those Nights” by Tim McGraw

There is a night in Breaking the Rules that Echo and Noah will remember forever. To me, that’s what “One of Those Nights” represents—that night where something so wonderful, so fantastic happens that it changes your life. It’s that night you’ll remember every detail of until your dying breath.

About the Author

Katie was a teenager during the age of grunge and boy bands and remembers those years as the best and worst of her life. She is a lover of music, happy endings, reality television, and is a secret University of Kentucky basketball fan.

Katie is the author of the full-length Young Adult novels PUSHING THE LIMITS and DARE YOU TO, and the e-novella CROSSING THE LINE. Her debut novel, PUSHING THE LIMITS, is a 2012 Goodreads Choice Finalist for YA Fiction and an RT Book Reviews 2012 Reviewer’s Choice Awards Nominee for Young Adult Contemporary Novel.

Writing has given Katie an excuse to pursue her passions. Research for her books has provided her with the amazing opportunity to train with baseball players, ride along in a drag car at ninety-six miles per hour and experience boxing and mixed martial arts. The most memorable moments for Katie are when she speaks to groups of teenagers about her research, writing and the truth that no dream is out of reach. Katie would love to hear from her readers.

I didn’t set out to write about parallel universes, though I should say that time travel and parallel universe stories have been my faves since I was a kid. Early on when I started writing, I wrote a…

Top Ten Reasons Javier and Hazel Belong Together

1) He drives her crazy: “You’re disgusting,” I say, narrowing my eyes. “And I’m busy. Go find someone else to annoy with your presence.”

2) Chemistry, baby: We sit down and everything shifts. It feels so… domestic. Not like we’re married or anything, but almost like we’re a couple having dinner together like we do every night. “So how was your day, dear?” Javi says, as…

MARY

No matter how much money was in their family bank, every kid in Eurus had a place at the in-Realm college. It was in the bylaws. Of course, most of the courtiers bought their way out to better schools in the Democracy and beyond.

“Giddap,” Mary said firmly as she drove the heels of her boots into Carrot’s burnt-orange sides. Her faithful friend dove headfirst into the wind and somehow gained speed, forcing tears from Mary’s light green…

The Walled City took me by complete surprise when I read and loved it a few months back, and now I’m happy to have Ryan Graudin on the blog for a look at how this book came to be! If you hadn’t heard of The Walled City yet, you can find my review here and see what it’s all about!:

Inspiration. For some, the term calls to mind midnight rushes of words: pages and pages granted by some benevolent muse. I’ve never really liked the inspiration=lightning strike metaphor. Instead I like to think of it as a seed. An idea that I plant and water and cultivate, which slowly grows into something I could have hardly predicted.

Every one of my…

In the Afterlight Dream Cast, by Alexandra Bracken

Oh man oh man oh man. The number one question I get from readers is who I’d want to see cast in a film version of The Darkest Minds. I have to be up front and tell you that I don’t know that there’s any actor out there who perfectly fits the way I imagine the characters’ appearance… but there are a few…

Time Traveling for Dummies

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today to celebrate the release of LOOP!

As I was writing LOOP, I had to come up with my own set of time travel worldbuilding rules. Through the process, I had some revelations about time travel in general. Some are common sense. Others are a little trickier. All are chock full o’ fun!
