Dusty Reads (9)

Posted by

Dusty Reads is a weekly meme, hosted here, featuring a book that has been sitting unread on my home shelf for some time. To participate, add your link at the bottom.
If you wish, you can grab the button and find more information here.
My pick this week:

The Replacement
Brenna Yovanoff
Released September 21st, 2010
by Razorbill

Goodreads / Purchase

Mackie Doyle is not one of us. Though he lives in the small town of Gentry, he comes from a world of tunnels and black murky water, a world of living dead girls ruled by a little tattooed princess. He is a Replacement, left in the crib of a human baby sixteen years ago. Now, because of fatal allergies to iron, blood, and consecrated ground, Mackie is fighting to survive in the human world.

Mackie would give anything to live among us, to practice on his bass or spend time with his crush, Tate. But when Tate’s baby sister goes missing, Mackie is drawn irrevocably into the underworld of Gentry, known as Mayhem. He must face the dark creatures of the Slag Heaps and find his rightful place, in our world, or theirs.

The cover made me buy it! It yelled at me! 🙁

I was actually put off reading this because of the negative reviews it’s gotten. I’m still curious about it and will get to it eventually. I think I’ll read her most current book first however since it sounds even more amazing! (The Space Between).

Have you read this?

Allergic to iron, blood, and consecrated ground? I wonder what kind of supernatural type he is then. Yeah, I can imagine the book cover would yell at you. It’s tempting me to go look for it here.

I guess I’ve missed the negative reviews for this one. I got it for review so I did read it and really liked it and I think I’ve mostly seen good reviews. I hope you fit it in soon and that you do like it!

  3. Ashley

Interesting! I haven’t actually seen any negative reviews for this one! I really liked it! A lot actually! IMO it’s even better than the cover, but I do also agree that The Space Between sounds AWESOME!

  4. Sarah (saz101)

I just bought this one last week!
My BFF read this book and LOVED it.
I’ve seen some negative reviews, but some uber-positive ones too… quite a mixed bag. Hope it surprises you 😀

It’s good 🙂 I love Brenna’s books. Think Maggie Stiefvater but more creepy and haunting. Some plot elements are contrived (but that happens often in literature :P), but overall it was great. I liked it so much I requested Brenna Yovanoff’s second book for review!

I read about half of this and couldn’t finish it, though hearing a lot of good reviews about The Space Between does intrigue me. Yovanoff has a great, creepy and atmospheric writing style, so as long as she was able to bring a great story I might consider reading more of her work.
Hmmm…maybe I’ll wait for your review to make up my mind 😛

My Dear!! I did read this one! =9
It is good and super creepy with a bit of romance! told from a male pov and sutff. Yet it didnt blow my mind. However, I really want to get a copy of The Space Between from the same author. It seems that in that book there is more romance (totally my thing hell yeah) and it’s very dark. Hell and demons and stuff XDDDD
    hope it helps =P

    muah! XOXO

I haven’t read this, but like you, I have it sitting on my shelf. I too bought it because of the cover. I do plan to read this at some point, the story sounds absolutely fascinating.

  9. Dani @ Refracted Light

I’ve read it… and it’s definitely worth a read. More horror than I normally go for with really vivid descriptions. It reminded me of a Tim Burton-esque world, but perhaps more haunting. I hope you enjoy it when you eventually get around to it 🙂

I also have mixed feeling about this book after read the blurb and some review, but I plan to buy The Replacement because the storyline looks very unique. The cover looks amazing!

  11. Andra

I tried to read this over last summer…I just wasn’t feeling it…There were too many books that I had read just then that were similar, so I didn’t really enjoy the first chapter or so and I stopped…maybe I should try again???

  12. Broche E.B. Fabian

I read this book because I wanted to see how it compared to her second work (The Space Between) when I read that one. It wasn’t SUPER but it wasn’t bad either, and I do think The Space Between will be even better. Worth the time it takes!

  13. Melliane

It was the same for me, I was very curious by this book and I loved the cover. But as you said it when I see the negative review I decided to pass. I would be curious to read your opinion.

So I have decided I would love to participate in Dusty Reads but I think I’d like to link mine up every Saturday if that would be alright with you Giselle? I had also made my own personal photo for the meme, but I have linked it back to your website so people can click on it 🙂

Anywho, I love your pick for this week! I can see why it turns some people off it seems little bit dark but there is nothing wrong with that! 🙂 Great pick!

I have read this, and I am sorry to say it is not my favorite. I had a hard time with it, almost like there was no point to it. But, everyone has their different reading choices, so I say go for it! I am really excited to read The Space Between
