Book Girls Don’t Cry: My Randomness

Book Girls Don’t Cry is a weekly feature where we each discuss/vent/advise on the chosen weekly bookish topic. Don’t miss Jenni on Mondays, and Amy on Saturdays:

All About Yours Truly!

After seeing a guest post by an author listing random/fun facts about their books, we thought it would be fun to implement it as a topic where we list fun facts about ourselves… except we’ve deduced we’re pretty boring so far, so this may not have been a good idea after all >.<

  • When I stumbled upon Facebook for the first time it was when I found it open on my husband’s computer (though we weren’t married yet). I got mad at him for making an account on a dating site and made him delete his account, not believing his “Just some social thing” story. We still laugh about it to this day!
  • I am deathly afraid of cooking with grease. I was making fries in 2001 (back home we used to make em with just heating oil direct in a pan, no deep fryer) and it caught fire. I was ridiculously stupid and decided it was best to try to bring the pot outside and throw it in the snow, except when I threw it the wind just blew the fire right in my face. I sported burnt bangs and eyebrows, and second degree burns for a while. But hey our house only needed a paint job! (Fireman says it was a miracle I didn’t lose both my hands from the oil creeping out of the pot which he was surprised didn’t happen). Now I can’t even be near the sound of grease crackling.
  • I used to be a horror movie junkie. Then I watched The Grudge 1 & 2. That face (and sound) still haunts me every time I close my eyes!
  • I sleep with my socks on (apparently this is odd?)
  • In our house we currently have 3 Macbooks, 1 Powerbook, 1 Mac Mini, 1 PC, 2 iPhones, and an Airport Basestation. 😀
  • I don’t have time anymore since I had my devil child but I used to be an uber RPG gamer. The last one I played was Final Fantasy X and X-2 (completed to 100% #hairflip – Chocobos haunt my dreams)
  • I have never been stung by a bee, nor have I ever broken a bone (now I’ve just jinxed myself).
  • I once smelled my eyeballs burning. (No I swear! I had Lasik and it was SO gross – still some of the best money I ever spent!)
  • We have a cat who can’t meow (she thinks she’s a human)
  • I’m from a small town of population 2,545  – it doesn’t even have a Tim Hortons!
  • I love books (this is totally new information!)
  • Since making this post, I now know I lead a very uninteresting life!

Now that I’ve dished out all of these super duper awesome me-facts, tell me something about you that I wouldn’t know! 😉

You crack me up haha! Same, I’ve never been stung by a bee or broken a bone. I guess we’re lucky. I could never ever be a horror movie junkie. Isn’t it weird that people who enjoy watching horror movies are the ones who aren’t scared and doesn’t it kinda defeat the purpose of watching it at all? I’m babbling, sorry. Oh and how does one go about smelling their eyeballs burning?

One (not so random, mostly boring) thing about me is that I am in love with vintage cameras. I’m practically obsessed about them.

    • Giselle

I got Lasik (eye laser surgery) and yeah they burn some part of your eyeball for that hahaha. It was gross!!

      vintage camera obsession is awesome!

  2. Jennifer | Book Den

Oh heavens, girl. I cannot sleep without socks on my feet. You are not alone. I have never broken a bone either, but I’ve been stung by plenty of bees.

I wanted to have lasik until RIGHT THIS MINUTE. OMG. I can never do it now. For real? You could smell… *faint*

    • Giselle

Bahahaha at first I was like “Hmm what’s that smell? It smells sort of like burning. What could be burning in here?… OH. MY. GOD!!!” Then I tried to block it out >.<

  3. Kristin@Blood,Sweat and Books

I have a fear of clowns (seriously they are evil yo), I get sick to my stomach just thinking of having to touch chalk and my dad once made Anne Rice 5 minutes late for a book signing because he was talking to her as they walked inside (him to meet me and my mom and her to sign books).

  4. Nick @ Nick's Book Blog

    OMG Giselle! You are hilarious!
I’m still giggling over your Facebook story! Your poor husband! 😀
I love sleeping with my socks too, especially when it’s cold. And eww burnt eyeball smell? That is the grossest sounding thing I’ve ever heard of. Even your cat is hilarious! 😀
Thanks for sharing, Giselle! I definitely had a good laugh. 🙂

    • Giselle

Bahah I was a nutter back then and hey it totally looked like a dating site! LOL

Eyeball burning, I promise, is not something you ever want to smell! 😀 But hey I have 20/20 vision so I guess it all worked out!

    • Giselle

I know, we’re uncivilized or something! But one was only 15 mins drive away at least. Now I live in town and there are tons – but I hate their coffee >.< *hides*

  5. Stephanie

I sleep with my socks on too, but only in the winter. I couldn’t eat anything red until I was 25. I absoultely will not eat anything without a drink as well. I visualize numbers by their coolness /popularity. 1 is the best, 2 is like its trusty sidekick, 3 is boring (yes I know that’s weird, but there are others out there…)

And I live on Long island where there are roughly 2.8 million people and we have only one Tim Hortons, which I think is fairly new and so far from me that I had to Google it because I’d never heard of it until now.

We’re all weirdos inside. But that’s what makes us special:)

    • Giselle

2.8 millions people? Holy crackers! I love my small town I would drown in a sea of people over there!

Tim Hortons is the Canadian equivalent of Starbucks. We have millions in the country >.< Your number quirk is funny! 😀

  6. Jesse @ Pretty in Fiction

You’re lucky to have never been stung by a bee or broken a bone! Hopefully you didn’t jinx yourself. I once broke my second toe on both feet within three days of each other. That was fun. Especially since I was assisting on a video shoot at a house that was still under construction. The stairs to the second floor weren’t even fully installed yet! Everyone was laughing at me hobbeling around and taking forever to get back with equipment and stuff.

  7. Kristilyn (Reading In Winter)

I start sleeping with my socks on, only until my feet are warm! And I LOVE horror movies … certain ones still freak me out, but I cant’ stop!

I don’t like cooking with grease, either … I hate the spattering!

  8. Alice

WOAH. You have a cat that DOESN’T meow?! That is the most awesome thing in the world. That cat truly is secretly a human.

I also have not been stung by a bee or broken a bone! And I’m also an uber RPG gamer. Gah. Final Fantasy! <3 All those hours…non-gamers don't understand.

Gosh, I'm so glad you made it out of that fire relatively okay! Yikes! I can totally understand how you'd be scared to cook with grease after that. D:

That story about you and your husband with Facebook is adorable. <3 I love how you thought it was a dating site. Ahahahahha.

  9. Asheley Tart (@BookwormAsheley)

    This is fun!
Actually, I have to sleep with socks on too – even in summer. I felt weird but I feel a little solidarity now so YAY for that!

Random about me: I’m super selective about bookmarks and choosing which one to use for each book I read is a MAJOR ORDEAL. I can’t use the same one back-to-back. So random, I know!

    • Giselle

Haha oh man you would hate my bookmark habit. I will use whatever the heck I find near. Once it was a diaper! (It was clean – duh!) lol

  10. Kelley (Another Novel Read)

WOOOOOOT for being an RPG lover! And high five for getting 100% on FFX and FFX-2! I gave up on it with FFX because dodging lightning bolts was NOT my idea of fun, lol. And I got 99% with FFX-2 but again gave up because I hate arena-match dungeon thingies…

    • Giselle

AAH the lightning took for EVERZ! I also got a lil help from my husband who is much MUCH more patient than me! LOL I also asked for help with the chocobos. Those little f!*@!#*&@&!I remember kind of having fun with the arena matches but it’s been a long time maybe I blocked it out!

  11. Megan (Ink Skies)

AHH, I’m a horror movie fan, too! I mean, I like scaring myself, but when the actual scary part comes… I run far, far away. I’m just weird like that. And wow. I don’t ever want to smell my eyeballs burning. But don’t they sedate you for Lasik? OTHERWISE, WOULDN’T IT HURT? I mean, you’re laser-ing your eyes, man. Haha, your house must be the second Apple warehouse or something. 😉 Great knowing more about you, Giselle! One totally weird and random fact about me is that I can’t sleep without a pillow over my face. And I can’t sleep without a blanket covering me. Apparently that’s weird, too.

    • Giselle

No they don’t sedate you they just give you eyedrops that numb your eyeballs (you don’t feel any different).

A pillow over your face? I would suffocate! haha. I’m the same with a blanket though no matter how hot it is I need one!

  12. Bonnie

Aw, and I thought my little hometown of 4k was small. 🙂 Dude, I totally need to get Lasik. Holy crap about the cooking with grease! I’ve never had anything like that happen to me but I refuse to fry taco shells for taco night. lol One thing most people don’t know about me is I have 4 step-children. My house is never quiet.

  13. Micheline @ Lunar Rainbows

bahahaha I love your fb story with the hubby, I can SO see myself having done something like that when I first got together with my boy. I’d set fire to a clump of shortening when I was in my teens and I’ve never ever baked with the stuff since. The pot was flaming and genius me forgot all the rules about not adding water to a grease fire so I chucked the thing in the sink and made the flame even BIGGER! Almost burned down grandma’s house O.O I sleep with socks on too but only in the winter. Don’t your feet get hot in 30+ degree heat?? Oh and my kitty Jazz used to not be able to meow when she was a kitten! She’d open her mouth and no sound came out! We wondered if she ever would be able to really meow but she eventually got the hang of it, though her mews are still adorably cute ♥

    • Giselle

LOL @ the shortening. I was told to pour salt on fire so I was standing on top of the pot with a salt faker. Frig that was so idiotic!! bahaha.

My cat’s like 10 years old so yeah LOL. But she can physically meow, it just sounds… abnormal O_O Like that shit is not a meow!!

  14. Candace

I sleep with socks on too. Actually I ALWAYS have socks on. I can’t walk on the floor with bare feet, that’s just nasty! I wear slippers all the time too and even bring them on vacation with me.

I can’t believe you have that many computers!

I’m afraid of cooking with grease too even though I never had an experience like that. It just always splatters and it’s scary. I did burn myself once on the oven and I was scared for YEARS to bake anything.

I don’t think you’re nearly as boring as you think are…

    • Giselle

Right? Who walk barefoot? That’s just weird to me >.< Oh I burnt myself on my oven dozens of times - I guess if it can't burn my actual belongings I'm ok with it! haha

  15. Kat (AussieZombie)

Never broken a bone either. I used to be completely obsessive about sleeping with socks on (I HATE having barefeet at any time of day – the only reason I have bare feet now is the heat, but I’m constantly thinking about if it’s cold enough to wear them again), and it was only when I moved in with my boyfriend who is the hottest sleeper in the history of hot sleeping that I had to start going barefeet because it was too warm.

Even now when he’s away for the night, I wear socks. And it feels SO GOOD!

  16. Kelly

I can’t stand to have socks on my feet when I sleep!! Only if I’m EXTREMELY cold can I wear them to bed and even then I take them off in the middle of the night-sometimes knowingly, other times I wake up and they’re just gone.

I’ve never been a fan of horror movies (I change the channel on my tv with just the preview of one) but I do know the sound you’re talking about from The Grudge. I was at a bonfire at a friends house one time and one of my “friends” followed me around the house (in the dark) making that noise. I guess it’s safe to say I FREAKED. They may or may not have gotten smacked. haha

I’ve also never broken a bone *knock on wood* and I too live in a small town. We don’t have a Tim Horton’s either. Or a Starbucks. We do have several fast food restaurants though. And we just recently got the liquor ban lifted. Before that, we had to drive at least 30 minutes if we wanted anything other than beer. O.O

    • Giselle

I’m the same with horror movies now I mute the TV when a preview comes on – and they ALWAYS come on during Big Brother. GAH!

We have no nothing in my town lol. But an actual city is only 40 mins away (which is where I live now actually) so I survived!

  17. Amy @ Book Loving Mom

OMG I sleep with socks on too!! Except in the summer when I only wear flip flops so I don’t have socks on. I also used to be a big gamer. I played World Of Warcraft for a long time!! I wish I still had time for it. I loved it. Also City of Heroes. That was super fun. I loved creating my characters!!

    • Giselle

I was told I was so weird for sleeping with socks! Sock wearers unite!!

I never played wow but I know people who lost their jobs over that haha. Never heard of City of Heroes. But the most fun for me in RGP is building up my characters to be the best everz! Like I always go extra miles for super weapons and stuff >.<

  18. Jenea @ Books Live Forever

You crack me up. I love the Grudge, but I certainly can’t say that I have broken anything. I have broken so many bone, it ain’t even funny. As for kids, I wonder sometimes what it is like to eat a hot meal. 🙂 Love the post!

  19. Nereyda @Mostly YA Book Obsessed

You like books? No way, me too! We could be friends!
I got lasik too and the burning eyeballs thing still haunts me. I kept moving and I was sporting bloody eyeballs for a month. I looked like something out of an exorcist movie. Totally worth it but I would NOT do it again!
The only time I don’t have socks is when I have my work shoes (heels, flats) or when I’m in the shower. I love socks. I sleep with them tucked inside my pants 🙂
Awesome post, I would love to read one from all the bloggers.

    • Giselle

Yay someone else who’s smelled their eyeballs burn! 😀 I feel the same though it was worth it and I don’t regret it at all, but I would not go ever again. Omg it was terrifying!

LOL @ Socks tucked in your pants!!

  20. Leigh @ Little Book Star

I’m a horror movie junkie too! Still am, but The Grudge is just.. woohh! That’s the reason why I can’t sleep at night and I run to my bed after turning my lights off. Literally. The hair, the eyes, and that sound that she makes is just terrifying.

    Leigh
    Little Book Star

  21. Rachel @ Unforgettable Books

What? Sleeping with socks is odd? Wow, I’m right with the odd category with you. I love wearing socks when I’m sleeping (fabric comfort) and never thought it was strange.

Fantastic and humorous post Giselle! I love the comment you made after saying “I love books.”.

    • Giselle

I know, right? I had no idea people thought this was weird until I started mentioning it to friends after my husband laughed at me for it O_O

  22. Jenn @ A Glo-Worm Reads (Owl Read It)

It sounds like you and I have a lot in common with cooking with oil. Only it was my brother who grabbed the water and tossed it on the grease fire. I screamed no but it was too late and the flames shot to the ceiling. Luckily it was a smallish fire and I grabbed baking soda and poured it on. I’m still afraid of cooking with oil, even with a deep fryer.

I don’t sleep with socks on, but I do have to have a pillow between my knees to keep my legs from touching.

  23. Alexia

I have to sleep with socks on or I just don’t sleep. Even if one comes off in the middle of the night I have to wake up and put it back on.My 2 year old cat barks like a dog. I swear it scares the crap outta me EVERY time.Like you Ive never gotten stung by a bee but I did managed to fracture my tailbone. Holy crap that HURTS!

Random fact time I have had five heart surgeries and two brain surgeries. Very few people know about the brain surgeries. Just family and close friends and my ex fiancee.

    • Giselle

Oh wow brain surgery! That must be all kinds of scary! O_O But hey you’re still here so I guess it all went fine! 🙂 I have a cyst on my brain and if ever it would grow I’d have to have surgery too but they say it’s unlikely and so far so good!

Bahaha your cat thinks he’s a dog!

      • Alexia

The brain surgeries were done when I was little. Birth & 4 1/2. So thankfully I don’t remember them 🙂

And yes he will stand on the back of our recliner and bark at the vent that’s fairly close to the recliner.

  24. Eileen @ ***Singing and Reading in the Rain***

Ahh I love these facts! But, the good thing with cooking with grease is that you’re a lot healthier! But I’m really sorry that happened to you D: Ahh my brother is obsessed with wearing socks, and he wears them during the summer when he’s inside, although I don’t know if he sleeps with them, I haven’t checked in a while since he’s been waking up before me to go to camp >.< And YAY for Apple products!

    Fantastic post, Giselle!

    • Giselle

I wear socks in the summer! You’re brother is the shiz! Although we have AC and my husband always has that thing full blast so it’s freezing in here!!

  25. Jenni

You totally should have used the picture of you as the Grudge girl to close this post out, that would have been epic. I have always been afraid of Lasik but you have scarred my from ever considering that shit, no burning eyeballs for me please!

  26. Amanda @ Hell-Bent to Read

    That Facebook one was HILARIOUS.

Let’s see…I am terrified of clowns. My brother let me watch IT when I was WAY too young, and ever since I haven’t been able to walk past storm drains in fear of the clown grabbing my ankles pulling me down.

  27. ShootingStarsMag

Love posts like these!! It’s fun to learn random facts about the bloggers you love. That’s crazy about your cat! I swear my dog thinks she’s human, but boy can she bark!!

I’ve fractured an ankle but never fully broken a bone (knock on wood).

I’ve had a whole in my eardrum. Well, more than once, but the worst was in second grade. It was like the worst ear ache EVER.

I love Christmas. I have been planning people’s gifts since last Christmas, even buying gifts and putting them away so I have things ready to go.

Oh, back to hurting oneself, I tend to get hurt doing weird things. I was leaping (a dance move for a play I was in) and fractured my ankle. I got stitches above my eye for getting hit in the head by a wooden baby swing.

    -Lauren

  28. Ellie

I always feel really boring after I’ve done one of these posts too! I’ve never been stung by anything worse than a nettle either (*flings salt over shoulder, touches wood and all manner of other superstitious things*), or broken any bones. Well, maybe a knuckle or a tiny foot bone or something, but never a REAL one that requires casts and treatment and all that jazz.

And I sleep with socks on too – it’s not weird, it’s warm! I don’t bother in the middle of summer or anything, but our house is pretty chilly so by the middle of winter I’m usually sleeping in normal socks WITH thick slipper socks on over the top. Can’t sleep with cold feet. 🙁

  29. Jasprit

You don’t have a Tim Hortons where you live Giselle? That is just a travesty! When I went to Canada, there was like one on every single corner I couldn’t get enough! And btw I don’t think sleeping with your socks is odd at all, I do this all the time and then end up chucking them off when I get too hot in the middle of the night. I think the only thing a lot of people don’t know about me (unless you read my twitter) is that I’m sports mad, I watch everything except for snooker and can’t wait for the football season to start again in August! Thanks for sharing this fun post with us Giselle! 🙂

  30. Melanie (YA Midnight Reads)

BAHAHAHA! Some of these things I think I shoul’ve been gasping but I was crakin’ up.

Dude, I don’t even cook but I hate the sound of oil sizzling on the pan, I get a little heart attack when it gets loud.

    Your cat seems hilarious! Hah.

    Fab post, Giselle! <33

  31. Shannelle (The Tracery of Ink)

Lasik is for fixing the eyes, right? (Yeah, I’m stupid. :P)

And hey, high-five! I never have been stung by a bee or broke any bones at all. I’m a pretty non-risk-taking person. And I run away from bees. Also, I want to get all your Apple gadgets. Especially the iPhone. Samsung’s phones are turning out to be very crappy for me unless they’re very primitive.

But that story about you and a frying pan? Wow. I knew they make great weapons, but I never really knew how great.

  32. Nazish @ Nazish Reads

You are hilarious, even your cat’s funny.

At my house, we make fries in a pan, I thought that’s how everyone made fries. Wow, I didn’t know that I was so ignorant before.
I sleep with socks on when my feet are freezing (which happens a lot, I don’t why my feet are so cold blooded). I don’t think it’s odd, but I do know some people who think it is. I think it’s weird just to people who don’t do that. I didn’t know that you were a gamer, cool. I used to play lots of video games and computer games when I was in elementary school, I don’t know why I stopped. I’ve never been stung by a bee or broken any bones either, the worst I’ve ever gotten is mild carpel tunnel in my left wrist for a year now (even though I type and write with my right hand), and yet I still can’t stay away from the computer. I guess we’re lucky, I fell so many times on ice in the winter, but besides a little bit of pain, I was ok. I didn’t know that you could smell your eyes burning after having Lasik, my dad never told me about that, maybe he just never smelled his burning, that was many years ago after all. I can’t get Lasik done because of my corneas. I’m not really shocked about the no Tim Hortons thing, because last summer we drove to Calgary by going North and we passed many small towns in Northern Ontario that didn’t have a Timmies, which seemed really weird because we’ve been around Tim Hortons our whole life, plus it’s Canada, and a Canadian city without one just seems odd.

Anyways, what do people not know about me? Hmmm…
I can’t think of anything interesting that people don’t know about me, so I’ll just say something random that people don’t know about me.
I was such a girly girl when I was in kindergarten – grade 5, and yet I still loved Digimon, Pokemon, and Beyblade. Now whenever I remember that, I always wonder how that’s possible, a girly girl watching some action shows. At the time, I was obsessed with pink and dressing up as a princess for Halloween and girly shows, etc. I don’t know when exactly I changed, but I think it was when I first started making random websites, which was I think in 2003 or 4. Now I’m only a quarter girly girl. I love to shop, paint my nails, and dress up for special occasions, but that’s about it. These days I’d rather watch an action movie or show instead of a princessy one. Also, I love Marvel comics, like Spider Man (I don’t think many people know that).
I love playing volleyball and I’m pretty good at it, thanks to my grade 9 gym teacher, before that I sucked at it.

  33. Christina (A Reader of Fictions)

LOL. Who would have guessed you would become a social media queen?

    O_O

OH MY GOD, THE GRUDGE. I hate horror movies because they terrify all the bejeesus right out of me, but my friend forced me to go to that on like opening night and it was just as awful as I thought it would be. EH-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h <- My attempt at making the sound.

I've taken naps with my socks on and wake up BROILING because your feet let heat escape.

    Airport Basestation?

I've been stung by several bees, which is probably why I have a phobia, and I broke my mom's pinkie toe when I was a toddler.

    EWWWWW. EYEBALLSSSSS.

What wouldn't you know? OH, in high school I worked in the high school library for a semester as an aide and I lost one of the books I'd checked out, so I used my powers to check it back in and pretended I knew nothing about it. X_X Evil teen Christina was evil.

  34. Molli

Bahahaha love this post! All except the eyeball story (I CAN’T EVEN) and the grease story – SO scary. Your poor cat who can’t meow, but I’m sure she’s adorable.

Also, I almost ALWAYS sleep with my socks on, or else I get cold.

  35. Kelsey

It’s always nice to know more about other bloggers, you’re not uninteresting! I’ve been stung by wasps but never a bee, and I’ve broken one bone before, my wrist two years ago (I hit a table edge really hard apparently).
The Grudge was freaking creepy, I still freak out when I hear sounds similar to that kid!
Something about me…I love the smell of coffee but I can’t drink it or anything else in high caffeine or it tends to make me sick! Which happened again today lol.

  36. Amanda @ Late Nights with Good Books

I <3 RPGs as well! Well, to be fair, I like the Final Fantasies. I've played both X and X-2 as well, and I started XII. It's been a while, though, and they're all unfinished because I refuse to get to the end without doing all the little side stuff (and that X-2 had a percentage complete annoyed me to no end. I'd start a game, inevitably end up missing something, and then refuse to continue that one game because I knew I couldn't get 100%. Talk about annoying!). Also, I totally sleep with socks on in the winter – so I don't think that's very weird. 🙂

  37. Wendy

Omg, I used to play RPGs a lot! I love FF! I just don’t have time anymore. =( But I’ve never gotten to 100% so I’m kind of envious! haha. Hmm random fact about me. I love drinking hot water. Most people think it’s the weirdest thing. But I’m asian and it’s a total asian thing to do! It’s like my comfort drink. =)
