Books Are For Giving! (And reading – duh!)

Are you ever stumped as to what to give a certain person for Christmas? This week on Book Girls Don’t Cry we’re making a list of the books that we think would be prefect to give to basically everyone and anyone! Now I’m going to assume that the obvious ones were already read by all (Hunger Games, Harry Potter, etc) so for sake of originality I won’t put em in this list. If someone hasn’t read these yet – Shame on them!!

  • Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally: This is one of those books that I think so many would like. I laughed so hard at some parts, I felt happy throughout it all, and even though I’m not a sports person at all Miranda has this magic wand for making you love it in her books. It’s one of those feel-good stories we all need now and again 🙂
  • Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen: One of my all time favorites and the kind of book where even if you don’t think you’ll like it because of the genre – historical –  (like I did), or think books about the circus would not be interesting to you (again, like I did), it will prove many wrong! It’s so amazing that I would urge everyone to give it a try!
  • This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers: Even though this has zombies, it’s essentially a contemporary novel with very dark, grim tones and a lot to offer. With the mix of genres, though, it would also appeal to a lot of readers – plus it’s Courtney Summers, who can’t love her? 😉

  • Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock: This is more than just another werewolf book! Since Twilight, followed by the thousand Were books, everyone’s a bit tired of the genre, but this is the one I would recommend to those who I know are sifting through the endless paranormal releases to look for something that stands out.
  • Angelfall by Susan Ee: I hate this genre, yet I loved this book hardcore. This is exactly why I would give it to anyone. Whether you love or hate angel books – do NOT miss out on this one! Trust me!
  • Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers: I read this one  recently and with so much bullying going around – online and offline – I think this book needs to be read by all. It’s a harsh read but also an important one! (Also, I should have just said “any Summers book” >.<)
  • The Host by Stephenie Meyer: This one kinda falls in the “obvious ones” I mentioned at the start but whatevs. I would give this book to anyone, but it would come with 2 warnings: 1) Give it 100 pages to get settled in and 2) you might not like it (seems to be a hit or miss, eh?), but if you do you will love it! Definitely worth giving it a try. Oh and also – don’t watch the movie first (who does that?)!!

What are some books you wouldn’t hesitate to give to anyone on your list?

We’re looking for topic suggestions for future BGDC posts! What would YOU like to discuss (can be anything from vents to advice)?

Review: Letters To Nowhere by Julie Cross

Review: Letters To Nowhere by Julie Cross

Being a big fan of Julie Cross’s Tempest series, I have no idea how I missed knowing about this series of hers before now, but I’m glad I came across it. Don’t go into it expecting anything at all like Tempest, however, as this is a completely different genre. It proves that this is an author with more than one story to tell!

Letters to Nowhere is ultimately about surviving grief, set in the aftermath of a horrible accident that takes the life of Karen’s parents. From the beginning I could already feel Karen’s loss. Her emotions were dripping off of the pages, making vivid her grief, sorrow, and mental anguish. I found myself sympathetic towards her before I even got to know her. Forming a connection to her is…

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews featuring the books we got this week, and I also mention blog news/happenings of the past week. How’s everyone this weekend? Getting your Christmas shopping done? I’m all about shopping online 😀 But yeah blog people seem to be going quieter and quieter for the holidays. A few are on hiatus and such. I will likely be putting mine on a few day hiatus when it comes close to Christmas. No one really reads blogs those days anyhow, plus I rather spend time with my lil one than worry about posting 🙂 So I went a lil crazy with digital ARCs this week – weeks like these are when my lack of self control shows through >.< Also before you…

If you would ask me point blank if I enjoyed reading this novel, my answer would be no. Because can you really enjoy something that hurts so much? Can you find delight in something that pisses you off so much? Now, if you asked me if this novel is one that needs to be read? Not only is that answers yes, but I would also add that this is a story that I’m thoroughly thankful for. It shines the most brutal light on bullying, not giving us a choice to look at it first hand. To experience the pain, the remorse, the emptiness that our protagonist feels. And Courtney does this in a way that ambushes you, with a narrator who was once a bully herself; a girl who has…

Holiday-themed books: Yay or Nay?

Ever since the holiday season arrived (quite suddenly), I’m sure you’ve noticed those holiday-themed books going around, and I realized I have never read a holiday-themed book, ever! I don’t know exactly why, to be honest, but nothing has really attracted me to them. I figure because most of them are romance stories and that has never been my go-to genre. My go-to genres are darker reads so, yeah, not very Christmassy >.< Though I am curious about them. What’s your opinion on them? Do you love them? Dislike them? Do they really give out that warn, fuzzy, happy…

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week:

At first this blurb sounds like an eye rolling romance story, and then you read the last sentence. Whoa! It’s these kinds of gritty contemporaries that I love!

What are you waiting on, this week?

Review: The Hallowed Ones by Laura Bickle

Review: The Hallowed Ones by Laura Bickle

Whoa! Who knew a story set in an Amish community could be so spine-chillingly gory! The Hallowed Ones is for every post-apocalyptic fan out there. It offers originality in its setting and a freakish paranormal aspect. It offered a lot more than I expected.

Katie is about to get her first taste of the outside world when all of a sudden that world gets dark and creepy. First there’s a helicopter crash where Katie glimpses at something quite eerie. Then she finds the town desolate and empty when she goes to try to find two of their own who never came home. Something is definitely not right. The creep factor makes itself present very early on in this novel, showering each page with this tense uncertainty. Even though things…
