Dusty Reads (3)

Posted by 17 Comments

Dusty Reads is a weekly post, hosted here by Giselle, featuring a book that has been sitting unread on my home shelf for some time. To participate, add your link at the bottom. If you wish you can grab the button and find more information here.

My pick this week:
Inside Out
Maria V. Snyder

Keep Your Head Down.
Don’t Get Noticed.
Or Else.

I’m Trella. I’m a scrub. A nobody. One of thousands who work the lower levels, keeping Inside clean for the Uppers. I’ve got one friend, do my job and try to avoid the Pop Cops. So what if I occasionally use the pipes to sneak around the Upper levels? The only neck at risk is my own…until I accidentally start a rebellion and become the go-to girl to lead a revolution.

I bought this early in the summer and it’s been sitting there since. I love dystopians. This one sounds particularly ominous. I also heard of the author before. I’ve never read any of her books yet though but I’ve heard she was great so I don’t know why I’ve been putting this off. Books like Name of the Star and Smoke and Bone that have been coming out weekly doesn’t help I’m sure 😉
Have you read this? Let me know what you think.

Ashfall Mike Mullin Published September 27th, 2011 by Tanglewood Press Format: Ebook

Under the bubbling hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone National Park is a supervolcano. Most people don’t know it’s there. The caldera is so large that it can only be seen from a plane or satellite. It just could be overdue for an eruption, which would change the landscape and climate of our planet.

Ashfall is the story of Alex, a teenage boy left alone for the weekend while his parents visit relatives. When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts unexpectedly, Alex is determined to reach his parents. He must travel over a hundred miles in a landscape transformed by a foot of ash and the destruction of every modern convenience that he has ever known, and through a new…

“In My Mailbox” is a meme, created by Kristi at The Story Siren, that features books I’ve received/purchased/borrowed during the current week. Hi guys! Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians! We’re having our turkey dinner tomorrow and I can’t wait to eat some stuffing. It’s one of my favorite foods ever and I only get to eat it a couple times a year. Anyways, enough of my dull eating habits, here’s my mailbox. I have received for review (click for Goodreads synopsis):

I have bought: 1- The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern 2- The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson 3. The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan I want to thank P.T Michelle, Marta Acosta, Amy Lunderman, St.Martin’s…

Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

The Unbecoming of Mara DyerMichelle HodkinPublished September 27thby Simon & Schuster

Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.

There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.

She’s wrong.

I think this was probably my most anticipated book in the past months, and I also think that was it’s downfall. You really look forward to a book. Everyone is saying how incredibly awesome it is. Nothing could ever be as good as this book – except maybe Daughter of Smoke and Bone – so…

As much as I wouldn’t mind watching him squirm, I know that he’s innocent. So I’m brushing off my previously untapped detective skills and getting down to business. But I keep tripping over dead bodies and I’m still no closer to figuring out who did it. And…

Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing – not even a smear of blood – to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

Helen is a disembodied spirit who “attaches” herself to humans in order to possess their bodies. Unable to remember the circumstances of her death, and with no idea why she’s in this precarious state of limbo, she knows this much: she’s been haunting the living world for 130 years. But when Helen inhabits the body of a high school teacher, everything changes. For though he remains quite unaware of her presence, a certain boy in his class is clearly able to see Helen. This realization, and Helen’s subsequent introduction to him, rocks her world.

Uncomfortable with the boundaries of her existence, Helen continues to test them and takes hair-raising risks — often for…
