Interview with Holly Black
Hi Holly! Thanks so much for dropping by my little place on the internet! I’m excited to have one of my favorite authors over!
Thank you so much for having me! It’s a pleasure to get to hang out and talk a little bit about my new book.
So let’s talk about the one and only Gavriel! –Describe Gavriel in a tweet (140 characters or less)

Gavriel is such an interesting character, especially his psyche, what was the hardest part of writing his character?
The hardest part about writing Gavriel was figuring out what he sounded like when he was blood-starved, what he sounded like when he was more-or-less in his right mind, and how to reconcile those in the same character. I wanted to write him so that everything he said — whether a quote, a bit of mad rambling, or a speech — made perfect sense if you were willing to look at it a little bit slant.
What do you love most about Gavriel?
He has seen so much bloodshed and done so much horror, but there is an essential core of sweetness and wryness to him that I adore.
And we’re all dying to know, I’m sure, who your inspiration is for Gavriel’s profile – did you have a certain celebrity in mind? Or who would be perfect for playing his role in a movie?
I never picture celebrities when I write. Should I ever be lucky enough that The Coldest Girl in Coldtown becomes a film or TV show, my main priority for anyone playing Gavriel would be that they be an awesome actor, because I think a great actor can make me forget all my preconceived notions about the character.
That said, probably the closest to the way I imagine Gavriel would be Aneurin Barnard because he has those slightly exaggerated features and the dark hair with curls. He’s a pretty great actor too.
