Romance Mini-Reviews: Two Mysteries + A Blast from the Past

Hard Rules
Lisa Renee Jones

GOODREADS | PURCHASE

Wall Street meets the Sons of Anarchy in the smoldering, scorching first novel in the explosively sexy new Dirty Money series from New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones.

How bad do you want it?

The only man within the Brandon empire with a moral compass, Shane Brandon is ready to take his family’s business dealings legitimate. His reckless and ruthless brother, Derek wants to keep Brandon Enterprises cemented in lies, deceit, and corruption. But the harder Shane fights to pull the company back into the light, the darker he has to become. Then he meets Emily Stevens, a woman who not only stirs a voracious sexual need in him, but becomes the only thing anchoring him between good and evil.

Emily is consumed by Shane, pushed sexually in ways she never dreamed of, falling deeper into the all-encompassing passion that is this man. She trusts him. He trusts her, but therein lies the danger. Emily has a secret, the very thing that brought her to him in the first place, and that secret that could that destroy them both.

Even though the book was pitched as “Wall Street meets Sons of Anarchy,” I had no idea what to expect when I dove into Hard Rules. I ended up being pleasantly surprised by it. Lisa Renee Jones crafts a wonderful, suspenseful mystery that will leave you begging for more (no exaggeration, THE BOOK ENDS ON A VERY HIGH NOTE.)  The romance did feel very insta but even though there is some communication issues (for real reasons), I love the respect and trust that exists b/w the two characters. If you’re into romantic suspense novels, you may want to check this series out because it is INTENSE. There is politics, drama and some messed up shit. I needddd the next book.

The Fixer
HelenKay Dimon

GOODREADS | PURCHASE

He’s known only as Wren. A wealthy, dangerously secretive man, he specializes in making problems disappear. A professional fixer, Wren hides a dark past, but his privacy is shattered when Emery Finn seeks him out—and what she wants from him is very personal.

Some people disappear against their will. Emery’s job is to find them and bring closure. Wren is the only person who can help solve Emery’s own personal mystery: the long-ago disappearance of her cousin. Just tracking down the sexy, brooding Wren is difficult enough. Resisting her body’s response to him will prove completely impossible.

Anonymity is essential to Wren’s success, yet drawn by Emery’s loyalty and sensuality, he’s pulled out of the shadows. But her digging is getting noticed by the wrong people. And as the clues start to point to someone terrifyingly close, Wren will have to put his haunted past aside to protect the woman he loves.

The Fixer was another rom-sus that hit a home-run. Its been a while since I’ve read rom-sus but I am so glad I found Hard Rules & The Fixer because they made me miss the genre. If you’re into Scandal (or were at one point but then stopped watching b/c the characters got too annoying like I did), this might be worth checking out. I was a little sad that we had a male fixer instead of a badass lady but the female lead is plenty badass without being a fixer so I’ll take it! I also LOVEE the romance in this one. It was also very insta but I was willing to overlook that just because of how well the couple works together. They communicate and always try to listen to one another and don’t automatically assume things. ITS GREAT when people ask one another what THEY need instead of assuming. Also the hero is biracial and that made me happy too :’) The mystery isn’t entirely unpredictable (I wasn’t surprised by the twists) but the journey is a good one. Unlike Hard Rules, The Fixer is a standalone so you won’t be dead by the end of the book because you need more. Would definitely recommend this to peeps who are looking to read a solid rom-sus novel.

My Fair Duchess
Megan Frampton

GOODREADS | PURCHASE

The unexpected duchess

Archibald Salisbury, son of a viscount, war hero, and proficient in the proper ways of aristocratic society, has received orders for his most challenging mission: Genevieve, Duchess of Blakesley. How she inherited a duchy isn’t his problem. Turning her into a perfect duchess is. But how can he keep his mind on business when her beauty entices him toward pleasure?

It was impossible, unprecedented…and undeniably true. Genevieve is now a “duke”, or, rather, a duchess. So what is she to do when the ton eyes her every move, hoping she’ll make a mistake? Genevieve knows she has brains and has sometimes been told she has beauty, but, out of her depth, she calls on an expert. And what an expert, with shoulders broad enough to lean on, and a wit that matches her own. Archie is supposed to teach her to be a lady and run her estate, but what she really wants to do is unladylike—run into his arms.

You know in so many historical romances, the dude randomly inherits an earldom or a dukedom or what not, well in this one, THE LADY INHERITS A DUKEDOM. Tbh, I feel like that should be reason enough to pick this book because I picked it up because of that. This is essentially a very well-written gender-swapped HR and every HR lover needs it in their life. I love the play on common historical romance tropes and I love that Frampton gives them her own touch. There is a nice, slow-burn, kinda forbidden romance and everyone is just so wonderful. JUST ADD THIS BOOK TO YOUR TBR, okay? I cannot say much else without becoming rambly-mcrambleson.

9 Books I Wish I Had Read in 2016

Posted by on 12/12/2016 • 15 Comments

There were SO MANY good books that came out this year but this year has not been a good one for reading for me. There are books I was eagerly anticipating but ended up never reading. This post is a shout-out to some of those wonderful books and maybe you’ll read them and shower them with the love they deserve. These books are listed in no particular order 😉

1. A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

I read Ember in the Ashes back in December 2014 and the cliffhanger at the end of that book had me eagerly anticipating this one. I WANTED THIS BOOK SO BADLY but ended up never reading it because wow time. I might still be able to squeeze it in before the year ends…

Rose Lerner on Jewish Representation in Media

Posted by on 12/06/2016 • 4 Comments

Hi friends! I don’t want to say much because I want this to be Rose’s space to talk but brief background. A while ago, after reading Lerner’s short in Gambled Away, I invited her to do a guest post about why representation in literature is important to her and being the kind, wonderful soul she was, she agreed to do it. SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, PLEASE PROCEED TO READ HER INCREDIBLY WELL WRITTEN and THOUGHT OUT POST.

When Rashika asked me to write a blog post about Jewish representation, I really struggled with where to start. How to focus. I had so much to say. I wrote thousands of rambling words, and felt dissatisfied with them.

Then I read this, from Aaron Lansky’s memoir Outwitting…

Giveaway: Spindle by E.K. Johnston

Posted by on 12/05/2016 • 9 Comments

Today we are partnering with the lovely people at Disney-Hyperion to bring you a fabulous giveaway! E.K. Johnston is an incredibly talented author and I am SO excited to read Spindle. I enjoyed A Thousand Nights and CRIED while reading The Garden of Three Hundred Flowers (a short b/w A Thousand Nights  and Spindle, more info will be below) so I am sure Spindle will be even better. Exit, Pursued by a Bear (a retelling of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale) was also one of my favorite books of the year so basically, I just need all of Johnston’s books in my life :’)

About the Book About the Author

E.K. Johnston had several jobs and one vocation before she became a published writer. If she’s learned anything, it’s that things turn out weird sometimes, and there’s not a lot…

If anyone saw the prom boards Amelia Blanco makes on her favorite fashion app, they’d think Ethan Laurenti was her boyfriend. They wouldn’t know that all the plans she’s made for them are just dreams, and that she’s the girl who watches him from the kitchen while her parents cook for his famous family.

When Amelia’s abuelita enrolls her in a month-long fashion internship in NYC, Amelia can’t imagine leaving Miami–and Ethan–for that long. As soon as she gets to New York, however, she finds a bigger world and new…

ARC Review: Poison’s Kiss by Breeana Shields

Posted by on 12/02/2016 • 10 Comments

I am not entirely sure what I was expecting when I dove into Poison’s Kiss. I was hoping to like it because I was intrigued by the premise but even when I was excited to read it, a small part of me was worried that it would not do justice to my culture. As a story, Poison’s Kiss is fine. The romance is way too insta but it is engaging, there aren’t many plot holes and the characters are relatable. The world building is EXTREMELY lacking though. From the small things to the bigger, general things, the world building needs work and this book would have benefited from some Indian beta-readers who might have been able to help fine-tune some of those issues.

5 Reasons to Read the Vampire Academy Series + Giveaway

Posted by on 11/29/2016 • 10 Comments

The Vampire Academy series is one of my all-time favorites and today the fancy 10th anniversary edition also comes out. To celebrate 10 years of this wonderful book being out in the world, I am going to share my 5 reasons for reasons for reading this series!

1. OTP: Rose and Dimka

I am sorry, I should probably start with why Rose is extremely badass and stuff but Rose and Dimka are my favorite part about this series. AND NO I DONT HAVE TEARS IN MY EYES AS I AM TALKING ABOUT THEM. SOMEONE IS JUST CHOPPING ONIONS NEAR ME. They are one of my top 3 otps for a reason. They are incredibly supportive of one another and so good at communicating. They have their problems too but they work…
