Isaiah has been a favorite character of mine since book 1. He’s got a badass look but the kindest heart and most gentle soul. Crash Into You, written in his POV, made me adore him even more. We get to see what’s going on in that hard-to-crack head of his. Having had a difficult childhood in the foster care system, he’s developed a rough edge, but to give a big eff you to stereotypes he’s positively one of the most generous and loyal person I know (yes I have met him in real life – be jealous! >.
I’ve got the wonderful Katie McGarry on the blog today for an interview as part of the Crash Into You blog tour. I’m very excited to have her over, I love this series! You can read my review of Crash Into You here if you missed it!
The girl with straight As, designer clothes and the perfect life-that's who people expect Rachel Young to be. So the private-school junior keeps secrets from her wealthy parents and overbearing brothers...and she's just added two more to the list. One involves racing strangers down dark country roads in her Mustang GT. The other? Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Walker-a guy she has no business even talking to. But when the foster kid with the tattoos and intense gray eyes comes to her rescue, she can't get him out of her mind.
Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.
But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they'll go to save each other.
Interview with Katie McGarry
HI Katie! I’m so happy to have you over! I’m a big fan of this series – Crash Into You being my favorite so far actually! 🙂 <3 Isaiah! So I'm wondering, which of your swoon worthy fictional boys was your favorite to write thus far?
It’s so hard to pick a favorite!
Noah, from Pushing the Limits, was just so smooth to write. He had this way about him that was seamless at times. And his love for his younger brothers always wound its way into my heart.
Writing Ryan in Dare You To always made me melt. He’s one of the rare good guys in life and does really romantic things like buys roses and collects rain in a bottle to give to the girl he loves.
But Isaiah…oh, Isaiah. That boy just makes me happy. I have a huge crush on him. I always have since Pushing the Limits. He’s strong, he’s loyal, and he has a heart of gold. All of that is in this totally hot package of tattoos, muscles, and earrings. How can you not love Isaiah?
You’re a master at passion filled romances, what’s your secret to giving characters chemistry? Is that something that just comes natural to you?
Conflict is my secret to chemistry! I love writing characters that are attracted to one another, but don’t want to be.
Isaiah is a foster kid scraping to get by. Rachel belongs to one of the wealthiest families in the state. Her family will not be happy with him showing up on their doorstep. For Isaiah, he’s not interested in being with someone whose friends and family will continually put him down.
But Isaiah and Rachel are drawn to each other and they fight it. He shouldn’t want to kiss her. She shouldn’t want to kiss him. And when they do kiss? It’s fireworks!
What was the funnest part of writing Crash Into You?
One of the best parts of writing Crash Into You was the research! I hung out at a local (legal) drag way in order to understand cars, drag racing, and my characters. Everyone there was so friendly. Definitely one of the best experiences of my life!
Do you have a favorite quote in this book?
This is from Isaiah: “I’ve sat on this hill a hundred times, and all I used to see were lights that represented places where I wasn’t wanted, where I never belonged. Now, when you aren’t with me, I look east and know that one of those lights represents you, and I don’t feel alone anymore.”
Are any parts/characters in your books based on real life or is it all purely imagination?
I put a teeny, tiny shred of myself into all of my characters. The emotions behind the characters are definitely real. Sometimes I base scenes after real life experiences, but they are so morphed that I wouldn’t call them “real” anymore.
I think we’re all dying to know – how many books are you planning for this series?
After Crash Into You releases on November 26th, my next book will be Take Me On (scheduled to be released in May 2014). Take Me On will follow West. He’s Rachel’s brother and a character you will meet in Crash Into You.
To be honest, I don’t know the answer as to how many specific books will be in the Pushing the Limits series, but I’ve enjoyed the ones I’ve written so far.
Thanks so much for stopping by! I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us next! 🙂
About the Author
Katie was a teenager during the age of grunge and boy bands and remembers those years as the best and worst of her life. She is a lover of music, happy endings, reality television, and is a secret University of Kentucky basketball fan.
Katie is the author of the full-length Young Adult novels PUSHING THE LIMITS and DARE YOU TO, and the e-novella CROSSING THE LINE. Her debut novel, PUSHING THE LIMITS, is a 2012 Goodreads Choice Finalist for YA Fiction and an RT Book Reviews 2012 Reviewer’s Choice Awards Nominee for Young Adult Contemporary Novel.
Writing has given Katie an excuse to pursue her passions. Research for her books has provided her with the amazing opportunity to train with baseball players, ride along in a drag car at ninety-six miles per hour and experience boxing and mixed martial arts. The most memorable moments for Katie are when she speaks to groups of teenagers about her research, writing and the truth that no dream is out of reach. Katie would love to hear from her readers.
