Ruby can't look back. Fractured by an unbearable loss, she and the kids who survived the government's attack on Los Angeles travel north to regroup. With them is a prisoner: Clancy Gray, son of the president, and one of the few people Ruby has encountered with abilities like hers. Only Ruby has any power over him, and just one slip could lead to Clancy wreaking havoc on their minds.
They are armed only with a volatile secret: proof of a government conspiracy to cover up the real cause of IAAN, the disease that has killed most of America's children and left Ruby and others like her with powers the government will kill to keep contained. But internal strife may destroy their only chance to free the "rehabilitation camps" housing thousands of other Psi kids.
Meanwhile, reunited with Liam, the boy she would-and did-sacrifice everything for to keep alive, Ruby must face the painful repercussions of having tampered with his memories of her. She turns to Cole, his older brother, to provide the intense training she knows she will need to take down Gray and the government. But Cole has demons of his own, and one fatal mistake may be the spark that sets the world on fire.
In the Afterlight Dream Cast, by Alexandra Bracken
Oh man oh man oh man. The number one question I get from readers is who I’d want to see cast in a film version of The Darkest Minds. I have to be up front and tell you that I don’t know that there’s any actor out there who perfectly fits the way I imagine the characters’ appearance… but there are a few that I think can definitely pull off their spirit—whether that spirit is charming, brooding, or snarky. But the below actors are the closest I can get looks-wise to how I picture them in my head.
Ruby
I’ve never seen India Eisley in anything, but she has some very Ruby-like features. The dark hair, the light eyes, and almost doll-like features. I also like that she can pull off that contemplative, sullen look. Ruby is someone who lives a lot inside of her own head and hasn’t had a particularly easy time of it over the past six years, meaning she reads as being quiet and mysterious to the others. (At least initially!)
Liam
Ohhhhhhh Liam. I think of all of the characters, there’s the most debate on who to cast as Liam. The early favorite was Lucas Till, which I can totally see (I even used a photo of him as part of my Liam inspiration folder!). The key to casting Liam is really finding someone who can pull off his All-American-but-scruffy look and charming sweetness. Appearance-wise, the closest I can get is Zach Roerig. He’s almost thirty and maybe shouldn’t be playing a teenager anymore, but there you have it. (Maybe he could play Liam’s older brother Cole? They look a lot alike!)
Chubs
I’m so excited that Teen Wolf cast Khylin Rhambo this season so I could discover him along with the rest of the world. I love him and think he could pull off the two sides of Chubs: the vulnerable side that wants to keep his friends together and protect them, and his know-it-all/high-strung tendencies that make it so easy for the other characters to (lovingly!) tease him.
Vida
Vida is my queen! I love her and her foul mouth so much. Ruby describes her as being drop-dead gorgeous, and isn’t able to pin an exact ethnicity on her as she’s multiracial. Someone on Tumblr suggested model Jessica Strother and now I’m obsessed with the idea. That girl is fabulous and definitely can capture Vida’s attitude in a single look.
Clancy
Clancy, Clancy, Clancy. Any actor who takes him on has to be able to pull off Clancy’s many faces. One minute he’s the perfect First Son of the United States, the next the charming leader, and then, in the next second, the twisted soul who’s out to help himself and himself alone. My original inspiration for Clancy was Nicholas Hoult, but a new candidate has recently emerged: Dane DeHaan. Dane is my age (AKA about ten years too old for Clancy), but I love him! He could make it work!
