An intensely powerful account of a teen, bullied for her port-wine stain, who must summon her personal strength to survive abduction and horrific abuse at the hands of a deranged killer.
Sixteen-year-old Sarah Meadows longs for "normal." Born with a port wine stain covering half her face, all her life she's been plagued by stares, giggles, bullying, and disgust. But when she's abducted on the way home from school, Sarah is forced to uncover the courage she never knew she had, become a hero rather than a victim, and learn to look beyond her face to find the beauty and strength she has inside. It's that-or succumb to a killer.
Cheryl’s Top 5 Thrill Reads
Sometimes I don’t read a lot of thrillers, because my life was like a thriller–full of terror, anxiety, my pulse racing almost constantly–and I still need to learn to calm down. (smiling) It makes it easy for me to write with high intensity–it’s what I know. Other times, it’s what I want to read because it’s what I know and enjoy. I read a mix of YA and adult thrillers when I read them. Here are some of my favorites in no particular order.
– Down A Dark Hall by Lois Duncan
– Hate List by Jennifer Brown.
– Girl, Stolen by April Henry.
– In The Frame by Dick Francis (Adult thriller)
– Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess
About the Author
![]()
I write the books I needed and couldn’t find as a teen.
Books helped me survive. They helped nurture me, helped me escape the abuse I was living as a child and teen, and they helped me dream and hope. I love reading and writing books. I write both fantasy books and edgy, realistic fiction for teens.
My fantasy books often hold hope that I need, and feel others might need, too, while my realistic fiction is gritty, intense, and emotional. All of my books have fragments of the abuse I experienced. I write about some of the harsh things teens go through…things that I think shouldn’t be hidden. But I also write about healing, hope, and love, and finding courage and strength.

Melanie (YA Midnight Reads)
I don’t read many thrillers either–you can tell because I haven’t read any of those. Heck, the only one I’ve heard of is Hate List, which I really want to read.
Fab list there! <33

Great post!! I read (or used to) a lot of thrillers. I haven’t read any of those ones though. I have been wanting to read Cheryl’s books. They sound really great!

I’ve heard of Hate List and Girl, Stolen. I think Girl,Stolen is on my wishlist already. 🙂 I can tell you that I met Cheryl at a book signing last fall and had a wonderful conversation. Love seeing STAINED all over the blogosphere!

I’m listening to Stained on audio right now. It’s so good! I’m still early-on in the story, and eager to see where it will go. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

The only one on her list I’ve read is Girl Stolen and it was fantastic! I’ve found myself enjoying more thriller-like stories lately though so I’ll keep these others in mind!
